True they would have been in a far worse situation.

    Please explain:

    a) Why, given the Tories natural aversion to spending at anything like the level of NULab, you think this.

    b) how it is possible to be in a 'far worse situation'

A good budget, if you earn less than 20k per annum - as far as I see the 0.5% NI raise only applies to wages above that amount.

I dont understand the claim of giving free school meals to 'low income' households- by itself - is a way of lowering child poverty.

It is good to see that efforts will be made to help sustain elderly people in their own homes instead of being placed into expensive care homes.

Overall quite positive report I thought.

He didn't make say how he would pay for all this? Or pay down the deficit?

You expected the big rises to be announced before the election?

    Naive.

The freezing of personal allowances/taxation bands, the 1% cap on public sector pay rises, the increase in pension contribution by the public sector, the rise in NI, all this is just the start. The big stuff will be announced after an election.

Hang on, seems that tax allowances have been frozen.

Even for those without a pay rise this year, with other costs such as council tax, fuel duty etc going up, everyone is either A) paying more tax or B) with the cost of living, poorer.

    Stupid smoke and mirrors again.

    :T

    This isn't a new phenomenon.

More and more people have paid top rate over the last 12 years. It's been done before and will be done again.

    edit:
when Labour came to power about 2m people paid tax at the top rate. It's now nearly 4 million. Good wheeze eh?

Well hey. At least benefits are rising more than public sector workers pay and they won't be hit by NI rises :)

    All is good.

Think I will invest in companies selling Stella, cheap fags and velour jogging suits. Should make a killing

Carers allowance wasn't mentioned though. What a suprise.

The lowest of all the benefits yet nothing ever gets done about it.
I used to suffer from lack of motivation.... now I just can't be arsed.

Does anyone really still believe that NI is collected for National Insurance anymore? Total codswallop.

It should be renamed 'Special Reserve When We Want To Pretend No Income Tax Increases' tax.

Not the snappiest catch line, I grant you...definitely more honest.
