its not our fault its the installers fault
if thats the case why does your company only offer a 1 year guarentee?
for your information the plumbers we use always go on the manufactuers training days - we insist on it and so do they (both plumber and rep)
just out of curiosity spartacus whats the company your working for planning to do when you won't be able to install gas boilers in new houses? - are they moving into Air source / ground source etc - what looks the most economical at the mo?
I work for BDR. If I am honest I don't know what the plans are with regards new technology. I know we are working on new designs of flues at the moment but that is all I am aware of but I am not in new project development.
I'll see if I can find out and if it is not commercially confidential I am happy to let you know.
We are doing alot with solar water heating at the moment. It is starting to take off in a big way. Partly due to the German Govt offering 50% subsidies.
As for the 1 year guarantee there are a number of reasons - the market place, competition, sub-components are only guaranteed for that length of time, etc etc."There's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist."

Much as I am fascinated by the intimate details of boilers I think there is a bigger picture here vis a vis Darlings budget. The car scrappage scheme is ending so the car industry has been put back on its feet? We are all going to be taxed more so apparently we all have more money than we need? And the next scrappage scheme is for boilers? You couldn't make it up.
I didn't know the boiler industry was in trouble. Or that boiler showrooms needed supporting, at least anymore than washing machines, TV's, football replica shirts, La Crueset cutlery, whatever.
Here's an idea. Mr.Darling - shove your boiler up your own. And stop taxing me to death.0 -
so how many boilers are left from 1984 and how many have not had a part fitted? (I did not think one would last 25 years without a part going wrong, neither would i think the average 1984 one would go 25 years without a part)
I really need a comparison for this rather than just someone telling me they have one.
I have a boiler that was installed around 1984 and repaired twice since (small part) but has now been disconnected by British Gas because it started giving out poisonous fumes. Can't help with the running costs information for you without looking out my old gas bills.YouGov: £50 and £50 and £5 Amazon voucher received;
PPI successfully reclaimed: £7,575.32 (Lloyds TSB plc); £3,803.52 (Egg card); £3,109.88 (Egg loans)0 -
hmmm
so if the pump fails in a new combi, the boiler has failed
if the pump fails on an older-style storage system, its the pump thats failed & not the boiler
might want to actually compare like-with-like
the problem with the scrappage scheme is that you could very well spec a new boiler based on a house with no insulation or d/g, & no matter how efficient the boiler, the overall efficiency wont be very good
whereas if the property was insulated & d/g first, then the heating looked at, overall efficiency would be higher0 -
Ive just moved house and ive got a old boiler if its just a case of swap your old one for a new one then thats great but if you have to deal with cirtain firms to have it installed its a waste of time, i have friends who are gas fitters who will fit mine for mates rates. so getting this so called 400 pound off a boiler will help us out a lot.0

Dont rip it out just yet. have it examined by an experienced engineer. A simple repair may be all that is needed. What sort of poisonous fumes was it emitting?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I would say 10 years is a recomendation based on TCO you can have it running forever providing you keep up on servicing and parts.
But like an old car it does not mean it is the right economical decision.
They do the same with electrics (they say replace every 10 years) you could still have electrics in from the 50's and they still work.
But you are more likely to die of an electric shock or your house to burn down in an electrical fire.
Wrong!! inspect every ten years not replace.0 -
