Ah but my Toshiba system which I purchased in 18 years ago the CD play still works fine (gave it to my parents).
And the CD player in my dad 15 year old car still works fine.

I purchased a cheap stereo before that and the record player had uneven speed and it chewed tapes.

How have your records faired compared to cds?:)

It is all down to what you spend in the end. Much like when we went over the advantages of purchasing Miele.
I agree. I bought a quality piece of hifi, and I expect it to last a long time. It doesn't matter what it is.

My records have faired well. I mean really well. Some of my early telarc classical cds are knackered, but it was a known fault.

Besides, records make better frisbees ;)

My wife is a vegetarian so i am partly by default. Also run economical cars, so doing my bit.

Perhaps you should change your suppliers for boilers then rather than fitting ones that last 5 years.

    ok tried

    baxi
    worcester bosch
    ideal
    glowworm
    biasi
    ferroli

who would you like me to try?

edit (ferroli are the only ones who provide a decnt guarentee)

He said that up to 125,000 households would benefit from the boiler scrappage scheme. Seeing as there are apparently 4 million g-rated boilers in the UK the scheme is not going to be open to everyone. Assume there is going to some sort of means testing rather than the free for all car scrappage scheme?

I replaced mine in October so I'm sorted.

    Foreversummer
A basic rough guide to help you calculate if you qualify would be nice.

so how many boilers are left from 1984 and how many have not had a part fitted? (I did not think one would last 25 years without a part going wrong, neither would i think the average 1984 one would go 25 years without a part)

I really need a comparison for this rather than just someone telling me they have one.

Also running costs would be helpful i could knock up the costing in no time to tell you at what point one becomes more economically viable than the other.

PS multi fuel is fairly part free and eco friendly, could last you a liftime

    i havn't got a comparison - i only know what i'm told by plumbers

edit - and from first hand experience in sorting out problems with boilers

have much more problems with A rated boilers over traditional boilers

infact B rated boilers do not cause any where near the number of problems that A rated boilers cause

Like cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh hang on the average car has a life nearly double that of a car 20 years ago.
Electronics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh hang on the average computer is far more reliable than 10 years ago.

Metal etc are far better than years ago.

i really do not know why everyone raves on "things were better made in the past"

It really is Bull S*** unless we are talking fine intricate hand made stuff like watches.

If you want a true cost/reliability look at boiler age and carbon monoxide poisoning.

You haven't bought any white goods then recently?

But you are only responsible for 2 years how do you know the average life is 5 years (even though the article says you should get at least 10)

Were you a builder in 1984? how many houses were built compared to now.

Fitting more give the idea of worse reliability but the opposit can often be the case.

take cars garages are busier than ever before even though cars are more reliable.

    Why? simple more cars.

Unless someone can get me some figures i am failing to believe this one, sorry.

But we are allowed our own opinions.

2 years - your having a laugh - they keep phoneing up with problems even if the work was done over 10 years ago

really its not hard to understand - A rated boilers are much more complex and they have a lot more parts that can and do go wrong

regarded as one of the best in the business

read reviews of Worcester Bosch in action on following link:

    http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews120948.html

note interesting that most heating engineers seem to say that A rated boilers seem to last on average less than 7 years (google it) - this compare to lifespan of 20 - 30 years for traditional less efficient boilers

also ask yourselves this question - how long is the guarentee for?

most are between 1 - 2 years - what does that tell you?

It tells you the manufacturer warrants their goods for 1-2 years.

My telly has a 1 year guarantee. Still going strong now.

Just because a part has a guarantee it does not mean it is designed to fall apart the moment the guarantee fails.

Heating Engineers claim that boilers last seven years, well some anyway, you cannot speak for all. They do have a vested interest in that don't they ?

you will evetually have to replace your boiler anyway (thats a given - they don't last forever - ignore what spartacus said)

Hmmm, don't remember claiming they lasted forever.
