Inferior materials used to reduce manufacturing costs. Outsourcing of electronic component manufacture. Complex control systems where simple is needed.

Inferior materials - name them. This is just plainly not the case.

Boilers are still available with less complex control systems. The Boiler manufacturers are responding to legislative demands and customer demands.

Outsourcing of electrical component manufacture. So what. It does not make it inferior. The electrical component manufacture it outsourced to where the expertise is. The same companies who make electrical components for the car, aerospace and other industries. If that expertise is in the Far East then we should use it.

You need to understand that boilers are a safety critical product and no manufacturer - not us and not our competitors - would cut costs to save a few quid. We will buy more cost effectively certainly. We have to do that in a competitive market. But all of the products in our boilers are from major "brand" names be they pumps, electronics, fans, heat exchangers, gas valves etc etc.

    This is very interesting.
Derek Hardman, gas engineer at Family Gas Care in Accrington, says old-style “back boilers” can last between 25 and 30 years.
But he adds: “Manufacturers are now being advised not to make boilers last more than a decade as the efficiency can go down substantially over the years.”
He added that some models can last for as little as two years if not properly installed.

On one of these maintainance/insurance packages what cost more to insure.

An old boiler or a newer one? (we all know it is a newer one)

I think that would supply enough evidence on reliability/cost to fix as that is how they cost the insurance.

You will struggle to get an old boiler insured.

    Key points

A boiler lifespan can vary but a new model should last at least 10 years

does cost per month not come in to this?
our current house uses less GAS on central heating than our old 3 bed semi.

That is hardly evidence that boilers are made to fail. It is one mans view. However working for a boiler maker in a competitive market we want our products to be the most reliable out there so people come back for more.

It is annoying when these urban myths get perpetuated without any basis in fact whatsoever just a few people making a few comments because things were so much better in the past

It is common sense if something is not installed correctly it will not last. That goes for anything that is a working part. My brake shoes for instance.

Like cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh hang on the average car has a life nearly double that of a car 20 years ago.
Electronics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh hang on the average computer is far more reliable than 10 years ago.

Metal etc are far better than years ago.

i really do not know why everyone raves on "things were better made in the past"

It really is Bull S*** unless we are talking fine intricate hand made stuff like watches.

If you want a true cost/reliability look at boiler age and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Exactly right. Material technology has improved greatly and the sort of things you can now incorporate into a control panel compared to even 5 years ago is amazing.

We also have developed much more accurate processes over the last twenty or so years and now have the ability to automate to ensure the processes are far more repeatable than they used to be.

Hence we have better products made from more repeatable processes.

I remember when you had to underseal your car to protect it from corrosion and new cars with faults would often be in the double digit category. Those days are long gone.

I would say 10 years is a recomendation based on TCO you can have it running forever providing you keep up on servicing and parts.
But like an old car it does not mean it is the right economical decision.

They do the same with electrics (they say replace every 10 years) you could still have electrics in from the 50's and they still work.

But you are more likely to die of an electric shock or your house to burn down in an electrical fire.
