Sky Replacement Card

A message appeared on my screen today asking me visit sky.com/replacecard. Apparently if you don't change it, you lose a few channels.

Anyway, I am not a subscriber. Just a person who owns a digi box and sky card for the free channels. To replace the card, Sky are asking for £20. I got this Sky card free years ago. Why are Sky charging? Why do I have to even replace the card?

Is there anyway to get this replacement card for free?

Sky are charging because they are a business and you are using their technology (encryption system) to access some of the channels. The cards are changed every 5 years or so to change the encryption to stop it being hacked. One of the reasons it is one of the most successful encryption systems. You will lose Sky3, Fiver and Five USA if you do choose not to replace it.

Ive taken my card out and I lose those channels plus my local itv station I can still get london itv so I will probably leave it at that.

do you pay any subscription? If you do that might be why you got it free.

We've been having problems with our sky for just over a week now. We get a message on screen saying that no signal is being received.

We have an old box and card and used to pay the subscription but cancelled it when we paying to basically watch Dog the bounty hunter :rolleyes::rolleyes: and the channels you get for free. Must have cancelled over a year ago but everything worked until last week.

Could it be the card or the receiver moved (we had a LOT of rain that week) ir was it a coincidence that 2 guys from Sky knocked on the door that week to ask why we hadnt got it !!

    Any help would be great
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!

    Get your remote,press 'Services'-'4'-'6'.
You should see two grey bars, what are they reading?
Signal quality should be over/about 3/4 up.
If nothing & as you say it's been rainy, unplug the box from the mains & unscrew the satalite feed,is the any water coming out of the cable & can you see the copper core looking shiny?
If the is water, then your cables damaged or the LNB's not sealed correctly, probably with gaffer tape & not amagamating tape.
    HTH,
    Spike
Oh,those blokes that come around the door are not from Sky,they're from a marketing company & get paid by commision, they can be dodgy.
(I had a job interview for them last month, the commision pay put me off!)

That's right, as long as your 'Freesat from Sky' card is under 3 years old; otherwise, it's £20.
    RIP independent MSE.
