Your right - workers don't get a fair deal. The transport is a major concern to all. My sister has to work (nurse) due to the fact she can drive and others can't.

How do workers get to work for 5.00 am when normally the sale starts on the 27th?
Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a stupid time for a sale start and I agree with you, perhaps it would of been better leaving it until the 28th. I kind of disagree with some of your management about a loss of business to your competitors. The next sale, whether it be good or bad, is the next sale. People would of still waited until the 28th.

  • The company provides taxis for staff for 5am starts on the 27th

But they have refused to do it this year as the cost would be astronomical

I kinda hope it fails, we can't gain or lose the sales bonus at the moment so it's of little consequence.

no i havent used quidco before.

when it was time for my slot i signed in. it said "your vip slot has began start shopping" or something like that. i clicked on it but it just showed the sale listings that you can see before hand.

did anyone else get this problem?

it kept crashing also, i hope it doesnt happen this time round.

what is the normal procedure ziggy?

This happened to me too. I rang the customer service number and they said they were having problems. They said not to use the link from my email as there was something wrong with it and to log in normally instead, and then it worked.

That's rude of them. Surely the money they expect to take that day far out ways the cost of taxis? I'd be up in arms about that myself.

  • Has there been a change in management? This treatment of the staff does seem to be pretty unfair.

No, no change in management, just a change in management attitudes

Wolfson still runs the company and Jane Shields up there as well

They are expecting a big hit on normal sales because of Boxing Day and the cost of the taxis will severely hit overall sales

This is what scares me about a companies morals in the present climate. Asking staff to work longer hours, take a pay cut, or, if you don't like it we will have to lay people off attitude. How quickly will these companies abolish the fore-mentioned tactics after the recession has ended?

You can't threat staff unfairly and expect loyalty in return. In my view loyalty and respect are the major requirements in a happy workforce.

Indeed, Next as a company are worried about the profit on Boxing Day. It's obviously not going to be as big as 'normal' sales as in some areas there's no public transport at all and limited shopping opportunities in some towns and cities

Alas...this is where the grumbling has come in. Staff aren't being paid for taxis, hence the later start in some areas and company sick pay won't be paid, only SSP. Staff have been told to make their own way into stores at their own expense and if they don't make it then its gross misconduct and its goodbye

We've lost a lot of goodwill on this from the staff, especially the part time staff and the full timers with long serving records when you consider that the temps are all on minimum wage and get relatively public holiday pay their entire wage could be spent on taxis to actually get to work.

The way I'd have done it..

Boxing Day Online sale, release of limited stock.
Sunday, sale launches in Scotland where this is no restriction and stock is replenished on Online sale
All England and Wales staff to work Sunday 27th to set store up for sale
England and Wales launches Sale 5am on Monday 28th, website sale fully live

This was one of the options but was voted down

Am keen to see how it will fare this year, a lot of customers I've come across seem a bit anti boxing day trading and have heardlots of grumblings, I completely agree with you on how you would have done it, 100 percent.

Was never aware of the staff taxi thing, is that for the head office staff in Leics??
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!
  • We always have boxing day trading up here in Scotland so it wont affect any Scottish stored directly really but it will really bite into the English stores and sales. My OH works for next too and this is the first year in 4 years he is actually off on boxing day, so instead Im getting him to taxi me about to al lthe sales LOL

They have also abolished taxi's at his branch for late evenings and early starts too and have asked other members of staff to fetch people in!

I just love their cost cutting ways esp when they have management meetings that must cost around £200 per time to do the food for :/
