Cor what's the most unpopular you've ever felt?

Just tried to explain to my mum about my sister's wedding and gosh I've upset everyone, my sister's really cross with me apparently.

But what can I do? My mum says "yes but he'll be better by then" - I'm trying to explain that he'll probably still be infectious even if he's better.

    :wall:

How about phoning your health visitor or your gp and asking their advice? It might be that he will be fine to go to the wedding, but if you don't ask you will never know and you might end up missing out on your sisters wedding for nothing.

Hope your little one gets better soon.

Don't know if this will be any help to you but the NHS direct website says

Someone with measles is infectious for 2-4 days before the red rash appears and for about 5 days after it appears.
    NHS Direct

Personally I would tend to take the advice of NHS Direct over other websites, mainly because, as you have found, advice can vairy wildly from site to site so it's generally best to pick a reputable source and stick to the advice given on it. JMO :)

My grandad was a GP, and I remember when my sister had measles the advice was similar to that from the NHS direct from Looby.

The vaccination hasn't failed, it's just that your baby now has the immune system to deal with it. Vaccinations don't stop infection, they limit it or support the body in dealing with it if caught. As the vaccination is usually some of the infection, some people will catch the illness from the vaccination. However the body in fighting it will develop antibodies for use later. My sister was vaccinated against all childhood illnesses but went on to get both measles and mumps.

Speak to you GP or community nurse and ask their advice. It would be a real shame to miss the wedding if you don't need to.

Just wondering how your little one is, and have you made a decision about your sisters wedding?

All my children have been given all their jabs, but there must be something in their genes whic makes it ineffective.

My daughter caught rubella 2 years ago after having BOTH MMR jabs. That was bad enough.

But today I have been told that my 15 month old baby has got MEASLES!! This is because people are not vaccinating their children. You hear such horror stories about measles and that is why I chose, in good faith, to make sure none of my babies ever caught it.

The trouble with these vaccines is that they are not 100% effective - we have to rely on a large percentage of the population being vaccinated. It is called "herd immunity."
The general scare with MMR caused the numbers being immunised to fall and although numbers have incresed lately, we still do not have herd immunity.

It is really important for parents to immunise their children.

Annie, I hope your wee one gets better soon!

I am a father to two children aged currenty 6 and 8. both have had their MMR vaccinations and both have so far failed to have the infections.
I feel for you all that have children that have been vaccinaed but what you have to remember is that what precautions you may take, there is always the risk of subsequent infection. in the same way that the flu vaccine is given, there will always be strains that will cause infection.
so you may think that this will lead to life long immunity? in the majority of cases this is true. however, there are those to which it is not completely effective and those it is not effective full stop. unfortunately that is life.
if your child has rubella and you are going to a party with potentially pregnant women please think again. it can kill the unborn foetus. please think of others before going.
not proclaiming to be an expert but at present there is an epidemic of measles going around the uk due to the lack of take up of the mmr vaccine. I see babies every day suffer as a direct consequence of these liberal parental actions. the only way to get rid of these infections is to use the vaccincations as similar to smallpox irradication.
ok so i'm a biomedical scientist who's job it is to determine such infections. please please don't allow other kids to 'die' because you want to follow the current trend.

I know it sounds harsh but that is what people are allowing to happen. I see it everyday.

Thank you all for your lovely messages. Well we had a bit of a scare at the weekend when LO started pulling at his ears and they went all gungy, so we took him to the out of hours doctr. Luckily, there was no major problem with his ears and it was "just" an ear infection. Phew.

Anyway, he's a lot better this morning, his rash has now gone and he is eating again. Thanks again.:D

One thing though, Mr H has now started showing the same early symptoms as LO did lsat week:eek: Don't know if he's had measles or not. Hopefully it's just the start of a cold.

PS re my sister's wedding. The way my family have been towards me after I said we weren't going to go, makes me very cross.

OK so he'll most likely be OK considering the majority of the advice is that he won't be infectious still. But we're thinking of not going now, because of how they've been.

We made a decision based on what was best for OTHER people, not for us. If they can't understand that and try to make me feel guilty and act like I'm the selfish one, then stuff them. We're not that close anyway.

I think you're doing the right thing about the wedding, you are making a tough decision based on the effects on other people so you are definately not being selfish and if they can't see this then they're the ones with a problem.

I can understand the family being upset but if you did go and passed it on to someone else then you would be the one left with the guilt, it would be different if you were just using it as an excuse not to go but you're not. I'm sure they will have it on video anyway so you'll still be able to see it.

Personally, I'll take any excuse going to avoid a wedding. Now you have TWO excuses and a reminder to your family to BE NICE!
