Private plates-good idea or chavtastic?
I'm having a struggle with myself....for as long as I can remember, I've never thought private/personal registrations are a good idea, PURELY because I've always had a bit of a thing about being anonymous as I'm going about my life.
HOWEVER, I'm coming up to a birthday with a 0 on the end
and the more I think about it, the keener I am on the idea.
Part of the background is because about a year ago, having finally got past the stage of needing a biggish car for pushchairs and associated children's cr*p, I was able to get something a bit sportier (Audi A3 sport) and feel like I was getting some of my identity back, I always preferred sporty-ish cars rather than "mum-mobiles"
The A3 is MY car, registered and insured in MY name and I very occasionally allow dh to use it (although "his" car is at my disposal whenever I demand it:D).
So, is a personal plate a good thing, or am I being daft?

My DH talks about one from time to time.
I always tell him no, I would be a bit embarrasssed TBH.0 -
My personal view is that private plates only appear "chavtastic" if you mis-space the digits or add stupid marks and studs to make the letters appear like something they're not.
If you choose a genuine plate that still reads properly without modification, they look smart and not gawdy.0 -
Only if you have owned the original car.0

It would be a "proper" plate-I work for the police and park my car in a staff car park so I'd not get away with it even if I wanted to!:D0 -
Same as Amanda. My mum bought me a private plate for my car to celebrate getting the job I have. I like it, but it does make it a little obvious what I do. Fortunately it hasn't been a big problem, but anonymity does go out of the window.
Personally, I'd never have bought it. I consider even the cheapest ones (£250??) a rip off.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

It depends what you drive. If the car already distinguishes you from the crowd, then a personal plate is an accessory that suits it. If, on the other hand, it is being used to distinguish a 2003 Corsa from the millions of others on the roads, then its chavy.0

This is a money saving web site, personalised number plates are not money saving.0
