We bought a bright orange Lada from a neighbour for £200 in 1985. Ran fine for 2 years, took us all over, easy to spot in a car park! And who would want to steal it? My OH used to use the starter handle for fun - and when he needed to change a fuse he had to decipher a wiring diagram in Russian.
Traded it in for a Fiat Regatta that used to die after an hour's driving - no-one knew why and it has turned me off Fiat for life!
Had a light blue Lada Riva 1200 for my first car (had wanted one for a while). Had relatives refuse a lift in it, and the rust in the wings was awful, but as a learner car it was brilliant. Dirt simple to work on, as long as you had a 10 and 13 mm spanner. Did a load of work underneath it, and never needed a jack, there was that much space. Took it offroad, went fishing and camping, held 4 guys, their gear and carryout for a couple hundred miles and was comfy and reliable. The inside was basic, but it was what you needed. Fitted a half decent stereo (to cover the lack of a 5th gear, and the noise that resulted) and a CB, and was a happy bunny :)

It was a Yugoslavian built model, and finally sold it to a place that was looking to buy them back. Last I know it was on the way to Russia for it's final days. Was actually sorry to get rid of it, as I'd 'acquired' a 309 to replace it, and that was always leaking. Not quite as bad as the 309 SRi I ended up with later, that had a sunroof that was more like a sieve :( Actually wish I still had it.

  • mine was a d reg vauxhall astra bought for 600 quid. The guy who had it before us used it to communte to Edinburgh and back. It had full service history and every replacement part were geniune vauxhall parts. needless to say, this all changed when I got hold of it.

It used to fly up steep hills in third and drove sweet as a nut. It had all mod cons, walnut dash, electric windows, sunroof, the works. We drove it all round Scotland camping in horrendous floods and she took all that was thrown at her (You did have to wedge the driver's window up if you didn't want a bath though!

Eventually the driver's chair collapsed and th body work dissolved into a pool of rust. But I'll never forget her.

I currently own a pile of kak known as a Xsara . bluergh never again

  • the sierra did look good back in 82, but the VX was far advanced, please discus,

never had a cavilier as the sierra never went wrong so no need to change during the caviliers time, i still see more sierras than i do caviliers though, they were terrible for rear wheel arches rusting away.

the sierra cosworth and the rs 500 still look as good today as they ever did.( so does the cavi gsi though) but for run of the mill i would always choose the sierra.

I used to buy and sell cars back in the mid eighties. Cavs and Sierras were the best deals and sold easily. Never had a real problem with either, apart from Sierra drive joints, must have replaced dozens ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Worst car? definately a 1971? MGB. Bought from son in law 20 yrs ago without checking it through. Damn thing had EVERYTHING going wrong with it, to much to enumerate here. Virtually gave it away. It had a 1800cc engine (BMC rubbish circa 1947) and when I was passed by a 1300 Escort I knew it was time to sling the b*****! Whenever I see one these days I say "Serves you right"

Mine was a Nissan Serena. Cost us £9200 back in 1997. We have 4 children and needed it for the room - couldn't afford a Galaxy or an Espace. It was a 1.6L so it was a bit putt-putt lol - took ages to get up to 60mph. The kids loved it though - they had tons of room. They had a separate heater in the back and we had a sunroof in the front and they had a bigger moonroof in the back. Also it had a sliding door in the back so I didn't have to worry about them flinging open doors in car parks.

I wrote it off in 1999 though. :(
  • My best ever "crap" car was my old Rover 200D. I paid £500 for it and it did me proud for 3 years, with almost seamless reliability and it never failed to return over 50mpg. To top it off, it had comfy seats and a nice big boot. What more could you want?
