Very quick post - what is the best way to clean a neglected, pale grey, heavily stained carpet? I've invested in some Astonish carpet shampoo, but I thought worth asking here before I make things worse.

:o It's me that's neglected and stained it and now DS is helping with juice, yoghurt, scrambled eggs...

    Any help gratefully received.

I cleaned some stains on mine at the weekend with water and stardrops and it came up good.

If it's REALLY bad, it might be cheaper in the long run to hire a carpet cleaner and go over the house over a weekend. We hired a rug doctor from Morrisons (shopped around and this was the cheapest, also have the best deals on 'weekends' - I think we hired it for one day (Sat to Sun) but as you don't get a full day on Sun we got it till Monday for 'free') and it was much less hassle than spot cleaning. I have the Astonish foam for small stains but I wouldn't want to use it on a big area, as it sometimes comes up 'patchy' if the rest of the carpet isn't clean ....

You do have to buy the detergents for the carpet cleaner but as you don't use it all, I bet if you asked on Freecycle someone might have some they don't want.

Thank you for all your advice.

Given the current chaotic state of my house, doing bits as and when is what is likely to happen. However, later on down the line I shall definitely consider hiring a cleaner.

  • I have exactly the same problem and used every chemical I could get my hands on to try and clean it and then got a rug doctor. Even so all the stains are not quite gone and I have come to the conclusion that beige carpets are not for walking on and mine is getting replaced this summer!! But what with? I don't yet know.

I use proper carpet cleaning liquid, the same stuff the experts use. It probably works out cheaper than all the stuff thats available to us in the supermarket. I think a ltr of it works out about £9.99

I have a proper carpet extraction machine but before that I would lightly spray my carpet with the fluid, work it in (agitation) leave for ten mins and then go over with my steamer.

The problem with using stardrops or any other liquid available at the supermarket is that they may clean (to an extent) but they leave residue which attracts dirt and very soon the carpets want cleaning again.
