It's not totally OS, but you could hire a 'Rug Doctor', or similar. Basically it's like a chemical vaccum cleaner and it's what professional cleaners use. You pay for hire (about £20 for 48 hours) and solutions. We used one when we left our rented place. The carpets didn't look dirty, but the water was coming out grey. You can get them from Homebase and some of the supermarkets do them too.0

eek!
dropped a glass between the kitchen and lounge resulting in smashed glass and fizzy orange everywhere - carpet, vinyl floor and wall!!!
blotted as much of the orange as i could with warm water...
don't have bio powder or warm water, nor stardrops or white vinegar etc so i tried...
water, bicarb and coconut vinegar!!!
smells quite nice actually but now beginning to think oops as it's a rented flat...
do u think there's any difference between using white vinegar and coconut vinegar?
will wait to see what happens meanwhile....0 -
Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice (I've looked on mega index and can't find the answer there). I borrowed my aunties carpet cleaner to do my parents front room carpet while they are away. Its a cream carpet, and the carpet cleaner just seems to have pulled all the muck up to the surface and turned it dirty brown, its sucked loads of muck up, but doesnt seem to get the rest up. What should I do, I've gone over it twice now and it looks awful, all mucky in patches! AGGGHHHH hope someone can help I'm scared!:eek:0

I know just what you mean - I have a Vax and it's scared me a few times by doing this (in the instruction booklet it says that this may happen with high traffic areas) the only thing you can do is wait till it's thoroughly dry then give it a very good vacuuming and that will lift a lot of this dislodged dirt, if it doesn't shift it all then you might have to clean it again.
The only way you can lessen this is to give it a very good vacuuming before you start shampooing by going over the high traffic areas over and over again0 -
I managed to shrink our dining room carpet !!!! There are a few gaps now where it should meet the wall.
It is very old but in great condition, but it isnt on grippers, its got rings sewn in underneath and secured every 2 foot or so - must be how they did it in the old days !0 -
When my sister moved last time house was carpeted with manky cream carpets and the same happened (I think she uses my Vax more than I do) We did as AT has said and vacuumed over it once dry which got rid of a lot, then did it again and was gleaming after that. Good vacuuming before cleaning it I always find essential.
Some carpets especially older ones do shrink with many types of cleaning. My friend has a carpet cleaning company and is insured for this and mainly claims when it's older carpets, wool ones especially. He hasn't had many claims but those he has are older carpets that have shrank. Sometimes he refuses to clean really old carpets that he's certain will shrink, may be insured but still ups premium/has excess to pay.One day I might be more organised...........

Hi all - I have one of Martin's books in which it stated washing up powder could be used to clean the carpets. I tried this, but to my dismay the next day I could see(very clearly) white marks on the beige carpet.
I now need to wash the carpet again to try and get rid of these marks - does anyone have any cheap (and easy) suggestions on how I can clean my carpet up please?
I tried to search but I can only find posts from peope who have carpet cleaners!Dream of being mortgage free....

I've got the same problem with a very grubby beige rug that someone has thrown out my way. If I've posted the link correctly below.. Stardrops looks like it might work.

There's a few mentions of carpet cleaning in the thread towards the end but do a thread search and it'll bring the relevant posts up. Fingers crossed.
Edit to say, sorry Ceridwen, re-read your post. It's most definitely chemically..One debt v 100 days Part 14 £400/£400
