I've ordered a few times from naked wines, it has always been clear what the "angels" club was about and what the charges were. If you've missed that, you're either a bit thick or simply lazy and didn't bother to read the conditions.
That said, I'm not a massive fan - there's far too much of a focus on new world wines at the lower price points, or worse, Spanish wines. Their French wines are decent, but are more expensive than you'd get from the multiples with no tangible increase in quality. They send me an offer every year or so which tempts me to see if anything has changed but all i tend to end up with is a broad selection of cooking wines.
I must say, this seems to be typical of virgin wines and laithwaites too. I always end up disappointed.
  • Sorry, but I'm neither thick nor ignorant of normal terms and conditions and the law. Nor am I that lazy. I used the £60 voucher which came with Economia (the magazine of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales). There was absolutely nothing on that which said that I was joining a club, or anything about being an "Angel", and there wasn't when I made my purchase through their site either. They just signed me up without asking me in any way whatsoever. I have reported them to Trading Standards and would advise avoiding this company altogether. I enjoy my wine, but I can do without the hassle of Naked Wines, thank you.
  • Don't see what the problem is. As soon I joined Naked Wines, I just cancelled my subscription via email so it cost me nothing.

People need to read the T&C's to know what they are doing.

A similar scam is happening with Virginwines, where they are offering you a box of 12 wines for approx £61-00 including delivery but you are expected to pay at least £5 per month for some sort of club membership. I immediately stopped my membership. Got my wine delivered today. OK but not brilliant quality... certainly worth the money but I won't be using again.

    HTHs.
  • I liked the wines that Naked Wines supplied but stopped 'subscribing' to them as I couldn't justify drinking more than one £8 bottle of wine when I wanted to :(

However when I stopped subscribing I had approx £120 in my account and this was returned to me within 3-4 days of requesting it and I never had a please come back to us telephone call/email since.

I had no problems with them at all and found them to be up front with their offers.....just wondering if its a case of people not reading the t&cs

I had about £100 in my 'Naked' account. Due to a medical issue, OH isn't drinking at the moment (he's not happy!). I explained this to them, full refund into my account within 3 days.
I'm still an Angel as it enables me to save towards Christmas. I'm not a spammer and I am a genuine poster! Lots of my family are very happy to receive a few bottles of nice wine for Christmas, so it certainly makes things easy for me.

Odd, as I saw the same voucher in economia (also being a member of the ICAEW) and I thought that when going through the process it was quite clear what you were signing up to.

You don't even need to explain anything to them. You can cancel and get your balance returned at any time.

They are not a bad outfit and have some good wines.

If you are going to buy from them it makes no sense not to be an angel as the wines are overpriced before the angel discount.

The money you pay for being an angel is all available to spend on wine (or get returned), there is not cost for being part of a 'club'.

The term 'angel' originally comes from the theatre where it refers to people putting up money to back a play. Now it means any early stage investor - which is what NW effectively claim to be.

The only problems with them are the clunky website (which [amongst other things] insists on displaying wines that they have long since run out of), and the embarrassing promotional emails that look as if they are directed at a particularly gullible 12 year old American.

  • When I ordered my mixed case there was absolutely no mention of signing up to anything, Lavendyr. None whatsoever. Since then Naked Wines have repeatedly assured me that they have taken me off the list, and STILL keep sending me emails telling me I'm "moving up the list" and that they'll soon be taking money off me. This is absolutely the worst customer experience I have ever had from any supplier of anything. (And bear in mind that I have been a loyal customer of Majestic Wine for many many years - never again.) I am now trying to get them to take their wine back, as I certainly couldn't face it after the harassment I've been getting. However, they are simply ignoring me.

I have to say I find this rather hard to believe.

Although no company is perfect, NW don't have a track record for this sort of behaviour.

You say they have repeatedly assured you; what explanation do they give for the continuing emails?

If you are that worried, cancel the direct debit (or repeating authority on a cc), telling the bank that you have cancelled your 'membership' but the company are telling you they intend to start taking money.

As to sending the case back, why?

If you take a trial case and don't order anything else you have got en extremely good deal!

If you really believe that NW are that bad, surely you don't want the hassle of dealing with having them pick up the wine and issuing a refund.

  • NW have resolved it. Three was no explanation for the continuing emails at any time, but I have now received an apology and a resolution with which I am satisfied. I found it amusing that their Marketing Director checked out my LinkedIn profile before offering his resolution of the problem; on the other hand, I suppose that was just a practical thing to do and I might have been inclined to do the same.
