When you open the Barclays account, it has to be done in branch. Only one piece of ID is needed (preferably a photo one). Account details issued on the same day. PIN arrives the next day after account opening, followed by the card the day after the PIN arrvies.
:confused: each person has their own preferences ....I have monthly statements from Coop, online banking & a UK call centre (without lots of codes & button pressing)...thats enough for me.:D

I have no maintenance/transaction fees on my prepaid card either.

I haven't heard of a pre-paid card without no maintenance/transaction fees. What is the card company that does this?

Thanks again all. I'm discharged so would hopefully get online banking with barclays BUT I've read it's a Visa Connect card (can someone confirm this please?) and m&s doesn't accept that either!! Very frustrating, but then I guess it's a small price to pay for being debt-free and being able to sleep again at night.

So sad angel, I think we might look into the prepay card idea. Would you mind sharing which one you have?

    Thanks again all!

Since you are discharged, you might get a chance of having online banking.

Connect is the brand name of their debit cards.

Thanks fermi. In a recent email about this from m&s they said 'We don't accept Visa Electron, Solo or Connect online as we can't verify the cardholder's age whereas the store can'. Is this Connect they mention different from the barclays one? I'll definitely apply if I'll be able to use it!

    Thanks again!

I think the 'Connect' they are referring to should be the Barclays one. I haven't heard of any 'Connect' cards, as a brand name, but not as a debit system.

The Barclays account is worth applying. :)

    Thanks book.

I think I'll see what the upshot is with M&S as to whether they accept it or not (although I fear it won't be good news). Does anyone know if it can be used online with Debenhams? If not I can't see any advantages over the Electron's new Visa debit for me personally yet. I'm considering a cashplus card as this would definitely work for all my online purchases.

    Thanks again!

Found a FAQ section about payment for Debenhams. The FAQ section is for online shopping. It doesn't say Electron on there. http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/...695_-1#Payment , http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/...tegoryId=18720 . However, it does say 'Connect' on there.

Looks like you need to open the Barclays Cash Card Account if you want to shop online at Debenhams. :D

Not sure if they accept Electron in store though.
  • just got back from quick shopping trip, I used my barclays visa connect card in M & S (treated my mum to coffee for first time in ages......what a lovely feeling!) and it worked fine.

Thanks. It's just online they suggest they don't accept it. They accept Electron instore too.

Glad you had a nice time-I know that feeling, fab isn't it? :D

Thanks again book. Hopefully Debenhams would accept it online. Maybe I need barclays, Electron (now visa debit for what it's worth!) AND a cashplus just so all bases are covered! :D

Thanks Fermi. Can you just confirm your question to them was about the Barclays Visa Debit? Does that mean from M&S's perspective it reads as an Electron??

Thanks again for taking the time to do this!

    My query to M&S was:
Do you accept the Barclays Visa Debit card for online orders?

The relevant bin code is: 4658-58......

The card supports "verified by visa".
I've sent a reply back saying essentially,
Sorry, This is not an Electron.

Please check your database and try again
