Visa debit??

Options
Hi all,

I know this has deen discussed before but I've just done a quick search and can't find just what I'm looking for.

I've been really frustrated recently when trying to do some bargain xmas chopping to find that M&S and Debenhams don't accept the Electron card.

Today, however, my new visa debit card has come through! :j

However, as the numbers etc on it are identical, presumably I still won't be able to use it on these sites as they'll still read it as an Electron?

Is that right? Is it just a name change from Electron to Visa debit and nothing more??

Thanks!

CG. x

It will be accepted anywhere thats excepts Visa debit. So do not worry.
    Happy bargain hunting!
  • It will depend whether the company has changed it's systems to accept the 4508 numbers as a Debit card and not an Electron card.

I know Tesco has not yet updated it systems as yet ecause on the day I was due my delivery I had a call to say it would not be coming . Very useful, needless to say I was not happy.

There is no harm in trying the other sites though. Just click on visa and let us know if you have a positive or negative result please.

It is a Visa Debit, but as rightly pointed out if the company has not updated its bin database, then it will still register as an electron.

    Hmmm thanks to you both.

That's what I feared Mrs Malaprop. If I couldn't use the card last week, then I won't be able to use it now, just because it says Visa debit on it. Grrrrr. When will co-op give us a Visa Debit card with a number on companies will accept as a Visa Debit??! Sigh...

    Thanks anyway!

  • Our local Tesco's is accepting it cause my husband is on his way home with our shopping as we speak and he just paid on a 4508 card. We haven't had any rejections of it yet but will keep everyone posted if we do.
  • They have always accepted it in store, it is just on line that they don't.

To avoid this kind of situation, open a Barclays Cash Card Account, which comes with a VISA debit card.

Co-op and Barclays are BR friendly banks.

Trouble with Barclays is that they don`t generally offer online banking if you are undischarged. So both Banks have their drawbacks....I guess it depends on whats important.

I have a Coop 4508 & also a prepay card with a balance as a backup....tbh I use it as an emergency fund & if I have ever been declined on electron I know that I can still pay.

At least the Barclays debit card would work all the time, and when Electron is not accepted. People could use this as a back up, and the Co-op as their main account.

At least there are monthly banks statements for the Barclays account, to keep track of things.

Pre-paid cards needs maintenance fees, which aren't good.

:confused: each person has their own preferences ....I have monthly statements from Coop, online banking & a UK call centre (without lots of codes & button pressing)...thats enough for me.:D

I have no maintenance/transaction fees on my prepaid card either.
