  • Thats all very well, but its a combination of comfort and value for money. When i wake up in the morning i would quite like it to be warmish, if i get up and turn on the heater, by the time its warmed the room up i'd be gone to work.

I understand the desire to spend very little money on heaters, but i also would like to consider the ease of use, appearance and running costs. I have a £35 convector heater with a thermostat and timer, but the thermostat is not very accurate and the heat is UGLY!

I agree, i dont want to waste money on gel-filled, titanium, etc, etc - its all rubbish; but a good programmable thermostat able to deliver accurate temperatures at the times i need them will surely save energy and money?

Agreed the thermostat isn't much good but what makes you think that a £600 heater would be any better.

Your heater needs to have airflow around it to be accurate. The temperature of heating should measured at shoulder height and it becomes quite difficult to measure at floor level. It becomes trial and error.

As far as waking up warm get a timer for £5 and set it to come on 20 minutes before you get up. Solved.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    Exactly.

You can get even get remote controlled sockets for a few pounds and thus have thermostatically controlled heaters on a timer and or remotely controlled.

I have been looking into putting a new heating system into my new place, currently with two storage heaters upstairs and a woodburner in the sitting room. I have to admit I have been looking at these electric heaters for the following reason:

We both work in the day and we use different rooms at different times of the day. We also have a plentiful supply of free wood. I have looked into having central heating put in (no gas in the area) but what puts me off is the lack of control over oil ch. Our wood burner will heat the downstairs of the house, but it is cold in the morning and when we first get in - so we need extra heat in the morning and late afternoon but not in the evening. On the otherhand, we'd like more heat in the bedroom & bathroom in the evening when we dont need it downstairs.

I do have some simpathy with defensive comments above as it strikes me that ch is the best way of heating the whole house at the same time but by using the extra control of the radiators you can target the heat more efficiently, thereby using less energy to heating the right rooms at the right times.

Eddakerman, I went ahead and installed the Economiser radiators after having one on trial (despite some amusing comments about xbox consoles, lightbulbs and £7 tesco heaters being just as good at heating) and can't recommend them enough. They don't look like electric heater - more like regular radiators and I had the whole installation done in a few hours. The only downside that I can see is that they are really heavy so it was a two man job to put them on the walls.

I have had them for three weeks now and the difference is huge. The whole house is warm and the power consumption is a LOT less than before. OK, the weather has warmed up since I trialled the first radiator, but the evenings are still cold. Beforehand I was having to keep the old heaters on all day to get any warmth into the house. Now the Economiser radiators are programmed from two central units to come on 15 mins before I get home in the evening and for an hour in the mornings Over the weekend they are set to stay on all day in the living room and kitchen. They warm the whole place very quickly and use far less power than the old heaters. I'd ignore some of the dismissive comments and give them a try.
  • My partner and I bought some economy radiators, not from the Economy Radiator Company, but from Farho. Now I must say they work incredibly well, and are actually as cheap as our gas system used to be, in fact in summer it is cheaper because we never turn them on.

The heat is good quality heat, not dry, not moist, just perfect. The thermostat works as it is supposed to, and only uses power from the mains when the room temp drops down to less than the temp the missus has set them to. We have a 4 bedroom house, 1 lounge, 1 kitchen, 1 dining room, 1 study and 1 family bathroom. It cost us last year £42 a month to heat our ENTIRE house. Anyone who says this heating is a con, is an idiot.

We are annoyed that we did not go to the economy radiator company as they have a cheaper product which looks exaclty the same, and they are pleasant to deal with over the phone. Farho are expensive, but very good. We can recommend this type of heating 100%.

Cardew's comments have NO evidence whatsoever to back them up. If you like I'll happily post a copy of our bill up here.

All these first time posters leaping in to promote a product;)

The one above reaches a new low!

    Pathetic!

Not being facetious or anything, but where's this extra heat coming from? Those joules of heat energy have to come from somewhere :p
  • We bought a house with storage radiators that were absolutely useless we have installed from the Economy Radiator Company radiators in all rooms. We have today received the electric bill and compared it with running for the same months another 3 bed semi for the same months on Gas central heating and electric lights etc., This house we are in is all electric and can't have GCH on Oil or bottled gas. I think not!!. The electric has worked out about the same as all the others but in actual fact is more efficient as I can change each radiator to come on go off either manually or at pre-set times up the temp on each radiator etc. and it's great when you want to decorate you just lift them off the wall supports paint/decorate and replace. I have recommended to two others and they have replaced theirs. Before anyone says I have a connection with Economy Radiator Company I don't . I did ask them if I recommended someone would they reduce my bill they wouldn't but I still think they are fine. If you have not actually tried them then don't put them down. For us they work but we have only had them in since August/September 2010

I really do wonder why there are all these first time posters always praising their electric heating system.

To say(or imply) that running costs are the same as gas central heating is rubbish.

Nobody needs to 'try them' to know that without any question these heaters give out no more heat for the same running costs than any other electrical heater. That includes a £10 fan heater or oil filled radiator from Argos(I don't work for Argos!!!)

You can buy for a few pounds sockets that can be programed to turn on/off these £10 heaters and even have remote control.

Care to tell us how much you paid for your radiators?

If they are so wonderful, why not get WHICH to test them or the EST.
