Not allowed photography at school play??

Just received a letter home from school stating that this year (sic)

"due to new regulations it is no longer permissible for parents to photograph or film pupils in school performances. I am sure that you will understand the reason for this".

Well no, actually. And neither can the school after asking them this evening. I need to wait for the head to explain.

So what are these "new regulations" then? I wasn't aware that a regulation was now in place bought in by either the LEA or government. And the school secretary was adamant that is was a regulation and not a new school policy (but couldn't quote either the regulation or the source).

If it's anything like when my 2 were little, you couldn't take a photo or video it, but you could buy a video from the school as they used to bring someone in to film it.

Paprika, you used to work with p a edophiles?

It's pathetic, what harm can your child come to if you are taking a photo of them, and have permission from the other parents whose children are in it?

We can take pics at sports day, they can't exactly stop us as we aren't on school property/grounds.

  • I actually came across a similar situation to this last weekend, my friends son was 1 on Saturday and we all went to a local ball pit and were told that we couldnt take any pictures because of the recent incident with that nursery they had a no camera policy in the whole building. They did state that it wouldnt be a problem if we were to go round and ask every parent in the building if they minded just incase we caught one of their children in a photograph!

However with school plays i would have thought it came down to the photograph consent forms you have to sign when they start school? Because of problems with my ex i specifically said that no photos of my daughter could be displayed or taken for use outside of her class room (for example she still has her photograph on her school peg). The school office actually pulled me to one side last week and said about the school play and asked if i was happy if she was in it due to parents taking photographs but they had given her a part as a sheep and would be supplying her with a mask which was actually a full face mask as apose to half a mask that the other children would be wearing which i dont have a problem with at all.

I cant see how it would be ok for one school but not another if it was a new regulation

They are probably trying to claim that it is the DPA (the favourite)

The following quote is from the Deputy Commissioner David Smith
"Photographs taken for the family photo album are exempt from the Data Protection Act and citing the Act to stop people taking photos or filming their children at school is wrong."

Just what I wanted!! Thanks. I will quote that at them.

I have to sign at the beginning of each term some photography/film consent form so surely should come under that.

At my childrens' old primary, they banned it because they had a number if looked after children and didn't want the families to identify them.

    Nothing to do with !!!!!philia!

    We sign that as well.

I guess if only one parents objects, it is enough to stop everyone taking photos?

friend of mine who works at a local school also said it was because things got out of hand, loads of parents standing up with video cams etc getting in the way of those who just wanted to sit there and enjoy , ended up with some verbal exchanges
