Its payed back into the BT account either after 12 months or when you leave BT, whichever happens first.

    Hello,

I'm renting an apartment in Nottingham, and move in next week. There is currently a BT line in the apartment but it is not connected. According to the estate agent 'BT have already been in the apartment.' Could anyone tell me whether I will be charged the £125 fee?

More than likely. Seems to be a default charge now. They should be able to tell you if an engineer needs to visit the property from their records, so try asking them.

  • Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this has already been answered, but I have moved into a new studio and there was already an active BT line. The old tenant took her number with her, so BT said that I had to apply for a totally new account and line with them. I knew I would be changing to Talk Talk straightaway as they are loads cheaper and said this to them when signing up. Anyway, upshot is that they want to charge me about £140.00 (a whole year's charges) because I've switched to Talk Talk. I'm amazed that they can do this. No engineer came out, all they did was issue a number. Also, their salespeople never told me that I would be billed for a whole year if I switched when I signed up. Is there anything I can do???

No because the minimum term for a new or taken over line is 12 months. See their terms and conditions.

The maximum BT can charge you is £70 not £140 for breaking your 12 month contract..

    From their T&C:

    41. If you take service on or after 1st May 2007 the charges for ending either a new line or a line that you take over before the end of the minimum period will be the lower amount of either £70 or the total of the monthly line rental left in the minimum period.

That is unless you signed up to one of their special offers which have their own cancellation penalties?

    Regards
    Sunil
  • Hi Sunil,

Thanks for that - as far as I'm aware I did not sign up to anything other than the basic line rental, think its about £11 a month. I guess I'll have to call them about this. Thanks for your help!

I am in a new build. However, I am a council tenant. I am not spending loadsa money on a new property (although I may as well for the rent they are charging!) I have paid twice for a line cos my broadband provider left markers on my line and neither bt nor tiscali wanted to take responsiblity so now, i had to pay another £125 for a new line. Unfortunately, I was late on my payment (due to their systems being down?!) and they want another £125 to reconnect as well as the money I have had to pay to the end of the contract but I do not get my line rental to when it is paid...I have to take a NEW contract. You lot are fools if you thing that BT 'need' this money. HAve you seen their profits just for the last year??????????? All cos they are scamming people like me. I should never have needed a new line if they resolved the issue. Needless to say, I still do not have broadband!!!

You had a marker on your line so paid for a new line? Are you insane?

I used to work for the markers team & if BT cant do anything it would be down to your ISP (Who im presuming is Tiscali) would remove it?

Yes, but it's good news for BT's shareholders!
