And (personal opinion follows, no proof hereof) it appears the cause was companies like Talk Talk insisting, falsely*, that they can only accept customers with an operational BT telephone line. *Any company offering LLU or WLR line rental can pay Openreach to connect/reconnect a line. Some, probably to save money, decline to do so.

People used to be able to get BT to connect/reconnect a line and then pay £18 to breach the 3 month contract. I heard that Talk Talk even used to reimburse that sum to encourage such action.

Hence, BT changed their T&Cs and now a 12 month contract is the minimum and breaching that costs £70 or the residual line rental (whichever is less). I hear Talk Talk no longer reimburses that amount.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Bulldog - £99

With Madasafish and PlusNet you are not tied into a 12 month contract for phone - just need to give 1 months notice.

An amendment to the above, PlusNet will only do an install for you if you are an existing customer moving home - it's not available to new customers.

    thanks alot britbrat for that!
  • Turns out I don't think it has been disconnected at all. I managed to find out in which name the tenants had the phone line before me. That was really all I managed to find out this morning as they put me on hold but left me hanging rather than with a department. So I just need to reconnection department to sort it out basically.

I've phoned them just but typically their system happened to crash so I'm expecting a phoneback in a bit where I get transferred between the 90 million departments which I've been talking to before whilst being on hold massivly. I'm getting the impression they don't want to speak to me...

Regarding the £124.99 connection charge - this charge is now compulsory if an engineer visit is required.

My students don't need an engineer to come out but it is still £124.99

Neo Napalm I wouldn't be surprised if you get the bill in the post.
  • That's what I'm worried about, except sending me one currently is illegal as I haven't given bt permission ever to set up a connection with me yet.

I have had another night of being unable to get through to the right department. I followed the options from 0800 800 150 and selected wanted to set up a bt phone line. I was answered 4 times by an advisor in broadband services. Its summing bt up for me now, I have no idea what I'm being charged, whether that unlawful connection has truly been set up and I can't talk to anyone who knows what they're doing, can help me or are saying the same things.

hi i hope someone can help me as i have bt line intalled at my home but have not had it connected for 8 months. i called bt today to ask if they could re activate my old bt line and give me a new bt telephone number and i wanted option 1. in the past when i have joined bt it has always been a 3 month contract but now they are saying the minimum contact is for 12 months!
they said they have now changed there terms and conditions for all returning customers and i must sign up for a 12 months contact as they no longer do it for 3 months.

i am very sorry to trouble you all with this but i hope someone can help me find out if this is true or not?
12 month contract and as the line hasn't been active for 8 months it will cost £125 to have line reconnected.
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.
  • Hi. Always a tricky one, this. I've just moved into a house and signed up with BT (hardware already in place) and then gone straight to TalkTalk (thanks Martin and team for the MS tip). I will have to pay BT £70 according to their T's & C's for breaking the contract but will still save £240-odd per year by doing this. Also had a chat with the OFT about competition rules as this seems a little anti-competitive - they threw up their hands and advised contact my MP(!) Why can't TalkTalk (and others) buy this service from BT at wholesale rates...? BT still have the monopoly on connecting despite many companies in the market. Something not quite right there... :-(

BT do not have the monopoly on connecting - Talk Talk (and any of the others now offering line rental) could, as BT do, employ Openreach to do the work. They just won't (preferring to let you, the customer, pay penalty fees for breach of contract).
