Im currently with VM and have had nothing but problems since they have taken over!!!!! So i want just a bog standard landline with BT but they insist they have t charge me £124.99 cause we havent got a BT landline which may i add 10 years ago there was definatley a BT land line there?!!!

So is there any way around there charge if they insist on charging me it, i will suffer poor service and stick with VM!

    Thanks x

It's a 'take the longer view' thing really.

Possible alternatives (listed by dawny10 a few days ago) HERE.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi guys a quick question,

I've just moved into a rented house that already had a bt socket in it, after ringing bt and getting them to send an engineer round, the engineer did a quick check and said the line was up and running. Now we have recieved a bill with the one off connection fee of £125, is this correct as there seems to already have been a bt line there and all they did was reactivate it.

    Thanks
    Sam

Youre rigth! Perhaps BT should scrap connection charges and just up all line rental charges to cover the fee instead. That way everyone gets stuck with higher bills regardless! :p

To be honest, I agree with that! I just think it's short-sighted of BT as I'm going to pay the £125 connection fee, but I'll be swapping ISP and phone company as soon as I'm out of contract. Much as I agree with what most people are saying about wanting BT to have a monopoly, when it comes down to it, I wanted to be a loyal customer, but the fact that I feel that I am being pushed into a corner and forced to pay annoys me! So much, I'll be leaving on the day my contract expires!

As it happens, I would have happily signed up for another couple of years if the connection charge had been waived, but it wasn't!

I would happily have signed up for a couple of years had the connection charge been waived. As I said, I'm quite happy with the service! This would enable BT to cover their costs and I would probably have continued with them (as I did before) when they offered upgrades to service etc

Whoops I pressed thanks instead of quote.:rolleyes2

I am not objecting to the cost of actually connecting cable up to the property, but the fact that the charge is indiscriminate and is charged even if the wiring already exists and is in working order. So in effect people in the latter case are actually forced to subsidise those not yet connected to the network.
Which is exactly what you are objecting to, with your :p. The cost spread over the millions of current customers would actually be minute.

The charge seems to be applied currently when the only effort BT has to make is "throwing a "switch" in the exchange" to re-vitalise an existing number from "hibernation", and no site visit required

Plus the fact that no effort is made to compensate for leaving a working system behind when moving, possibly to get charged again and again, if staying loyal, which is why I left BT.

Dude, the :P was supposed to indicate I was joking. I dont know the ins and outs of the charge why its charged exactly, why it applies even if its the second time a line was activated (as seems to be the case these days).

Dont get me wrong, if it is the 1st time I agree fully that it should be charged. But when a line has been ceased it shouldnt mean a charge as often as it does now. But Im just a salesman, why should I know? :)

Though thanks for the thanks, I will pu it down to my 6 pack and amazing abs.*

No offense taken or intended, I took the tongue as sarcasm and would have taken a wink as joke.

BTW the fact you are selling the product and should realise the downsides from possible customers point of view. Report the anomalies preventing a sale to your masters. ;)

I am aware of the downsides, but infomation we are given changes on a day to day basis. The advent of WLR3 has left everyone in the air with no clue on where is the softest spot to land.
