For info, the companies I have come across that say they do reconnections/installs:
BT - £125
Madasafish - £115
PlusNet - £105
Bulldog - £99
With Madasafish and PlusNet you are not tied into a 12 month contract for phone - just need to give 1 months notice.
An amendment to the above, PlusNet will only do an install for you if you are an existing customer moving home - it's not available to new customers.0 -
I am moving to Virgin Media - primarily for the 20 Mbps broadband but will get TV and phone package too. I have an incredibly cheap deal and although I call abroad a lot I will use Jajah which is free and will work on Virgin (unlike some of the override providers like 18185 I presume). Anyway, Once my line with BT is cancelled I presume if I come back to BT in a year I will have to pay a £125 reconnection charge?0
-
In the past probably not. Now it is anyones guess, but quite likely in the immediate future.
I suppose it will depend on how much this disproportionate, all encompassing charge, stops people " Coming back to BT".
Perhaps the penny has dropped that they are only coming back, using BT as a stepping stone to get Talk Talk etc, leaving BT with less returning customers than they had hoped for.

Hi,
I'm in the process of moving into a new home. I took out a contract for broadband with BT which doesn't run out until 12/1/08. I have just spoken to them and they say that if I don't pay the £125 connection fee, regardless of the fact that I won't be receiving the service, I will have to pay for the rest of the contract?!?! Surely this is extortion? I have read the threads here explaining why I have to pay it, I don't see why I should pay to make their service more attractive to future occupants of my new house when I move again. BT are already expensive, and like a chump, I have bought the services from BT directly, thinking that they had good customer service.
Any advice would be greatfully received on the legality of this issue.
Thanks,

Was there an existing telephone line at the property or was there no telephony service at all? (ie. you're in a new build & first person to live in the property)0 -
Hi,
It's a new build!
Cheers,

Hi,
It's a new build!
You will have to pay the £124.99 connection charge for the telephone line.
If you are unhappy, BT are the wrong people to vent your anger on - after all they have installed their equipment and someone needs to pay them.
Regardless of who you took your telephone/broadband service - a connection charge would still need to be paid.
Instead, I would be more upset at the housebuilders - they didn't pay BT and left you to pay for the connection charge..
On the flip side, when you move again - to somewhere where there is already a BT line.. you won't have to pay a connection charge.

Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
