I'm having a problem with getting the internet.
All service providers are failing to recognise my [hone number, even bt, the people who provide my phone service can't seem to check the line for data or something because the number 'does not exist' apparently. Even though it is working fine.

My friend said that they managed to get Bt internet a couple days after their phone line was set up in their new build.

I looked at the tiscalli website and it says something similar to:
BT usually take 24 hours from activating the line to release the data something.
If, in unusual circumstances, that this has not happened, it takes up to 6 weeks, as it needs to be released with an audit

    ???
I may sound like i need the internet crazily soon, but I do really need to start my uni work for my final year, and the internet is a vital source :(

    help!!!!

I assume you already have free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls and peak UK 01/02 calls for 5p each regardless of duration.

In which case, you can at least use www.geoisp.co.uk's free/cheap dial up in the interim.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Call your chosen broadband ISP and tell them you need them to submit a 'manual order' to BT Wholesale for your ADSL service - as your number does not yet show on the BT Wholesale database.

A Manual Order should skip the 1st stage of the order process, which is an automated check on the said database..

Again its all to do with this new system, its taking far longer to place orders which is why the call queue is so long and some advisors evidently don't know how to place orders properly yet, there have been many failed orders.

But I'm sure BT are trying to sort it out...

Thank you for your very informative posts. And welcome to MSE.

BT seems to be taking on the BG customer service model :rolleyes2

What is achieved by seperating different sections of a business into companies that provide the same previously in-house services, but now at a profit and with the extra expense of selling the services to each other and proving it.

A product the nonsense this country is being wrapped up in, by a bunch of Confident Incompetants and are spreading like a cancer.

I will not be comming back to BT

I agree. Unfortunately, the Openreach thing was Ofcom's (not so) bright idea.

Unfortunately calls to ISPs on 01/02 numbers are not included in any call packages. BT specially flags them and charges you the going rate for a call at that time of day.

I thought it would be free (01/02 are free to call in my package). Tried it and I was charged, least for the one I called.

I never use BT for 01/02 calls (Primus Saver Option 2 evenings and weekends and 18185 weekdays).

www.geoISP.co.uk surfing certainly works on 18866 (5p for dial up surfing of any duration) but I've not tried using Primus Saver Option 2 for evening or weekend dial up yet.

It does usually take between 24-48 hours for the order to close off properly on the system. If the line stills shows as provisional on the system nobody will recognise the number so it maybe the order hasn't closed off properly.

Getting the ISP to submit a manual form might be an option, problem is in my dept (and I work in BB sales) people have heard of such forms but have no idea what they actually are let alone be able to get one sent off.

The only other option is to ring BT wholesale on 0800 169 0934 but I'm not sure they'll be able to help if the number hasn't gone through the system properly.

I have seen certain lines have this problem before but we were told to tell the customer to keep checking back every couple of days until the proper checks had been done. Not a great option but some things seem to be a mystery at BT

For info, the companies I have come across that say they do reconnections/installs:
    BT - £125
    Madasafish - £115
    PlusNet - £105
    Bulldog - £99

With Madasafish and PlusNet you are not tied into a 12 month contract for phone - just need to give 1 months notice.
