I'm soon to be moving into a new property and will require a phone line, if only so I can get ADSL. Anyway, having looked at BT's website it quotes a figure of £125 for a brand new line, and says it will be cheaper if there is already a line and master socket in the property, which there is. Can anyone tell me how much this will cost?
If that socket carried a BT line in the not-too-distant past, the new line should be classed as a 'reconnection' and should be free of change.

The only way to find out is to give BT a ring - 0800 800 150

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

125.00 is excessive it should never have gone over 100.00, those going on LUS,IC or new Basic dont even get a reduction
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • I have lived in the same house for 20 years and had a BT phone line. About 7 years ago I moved to cable and had the line disconnected. The line and box are still in place. Today I phoned BT to enquire about reconnection. I was told that their records show that there has never been a BT line at my address!!, so therefore the £125.00 reconnection would apply.

Can anyone advise on the BT rules - sounds unfair, as a site visit is not required...

Plug a phone into it, see if it has a dial tone.

Sounds a bit far fetched but I have a second line here that works but is not paid for.

After reading through all the 15 pages (yes!) I realise that there's nothing we can do.

We're moving into a new building that doesn't have a landline. The letting agent suggested that we could split the £125 BT connection fee between us and the landlord, but when she actually asked the landlord, he/they said no, as "they were happy to use mobiles" (according to her quote).
To be honest, she shouldn't have suggested it in the first place, or otherwise try harder to convince the landlord.
My gf thinks it's a sign that this is going to be a difficult landlord, but I don't see it like that. Do you?

We need the phone line for internet, so I guess it's another cost here *sigh*

(I really need to sell my car...)

I am writing this on behalf of an elderly friend who has recently moved into a luxury apartment specifically designed for retirement living. The apartment is already cabled for BT and my friend even brought her number with her. The above cost was the "one off" connection fee. How can this be justifiedicon5.gif. The engineer just had to re-instate a link at the exchange and the line was live. When she called BT to question the cost she had to talk to a very nice foreign gentleman who unfortunately didnt understand her and didnt speak very good English.
I've a funny feeling this bill will not be paid until this is resolved. DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!

    Have you read this thread?

The standard BT connection charge is actually £124.99 (= 106.37 + VAT)

I assume that this apartment your friend has moved into is a 'new build' - in which case BT will have fitted the line while the property was being built but have not charged anyone for it being installed - until your friend came along as the 'first user'

If you read the posts on this thread you will see a lot more is involved in installing a new line than the last bit when the engineer finally activates the line - and costs a lot more than £125

If there had previously been an 'active' BT line at the property, than reconnecting that would normally have been free.

    Regards

    Sunhil hi, or Heinz maybe?

I have a problem that you may be able to advise on.

We had a BT line, just as I was thinking of getting it re-activated somehow (builder or gale?) the wire from the pole to the roof came down/broke. Before I could do anything the cable was removed from the pole presumably by BT.
I can only think a neighbour reported it and because we were with NTL it was removed without anyone contacting me.

So dilema is havent gone back to BT having left because I had previously spent a fortune fitting BT lines into houses around the country and when forced to move on left BT with a cash cow. My NTL installations were free and 12+ years ago they were heaps cheaper.

Any ideas on how to approach BT without incurring the £125ish fee?
    Thanks in advance.

My guess from all the other posts here is you will have to pay around £120 to have a BT line again.

If they have to get an engineer to do any work that's the cost.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to here but if anyone else has any other idea I would like to know too.

I guess if you were a BT enginner in the past maybe you could fix the line (Ilegaly) DIY and then ring them up. Or if you know a friendly enginner see if they could do it on the side. With BT now charging so much, more and more people will be doing it themselfs.

Sorry, dc but I've got to agree with BritBrat there - BT will have to employ Openreach to reinstate the line from the pole, they'll have to pay for that and you'll therefore get a £124.99 charge.

I suspect this is one of those cases where it will depend on what BT's computer system says and just as importantly the engineer who turns up.

If the computer system thinks there is still a previously connected line present, BT will say 'may charge you up to £125' and then it depends on what the engineer reports back - though I understand they often reconnect for free even where some work has to be done.. - i.e. if the cable company disconnected the line etc..

I don't think you would get BT's agreement 'in advance' not to charge you anything though.

    Regards
    Sunil
