BT Connection Charges (merged threads)

Welcome to the MSE forums katyshaw.
If the flat is a 'new build' it has the necessary wiring but no connection to the BT network. That costs the first person £124.99 (I don't know where the extra £13 comes from). On BT, the minimum contract is 12 months.
If you don't want to pay that, ask one of the other line 'providers' now in the market (e.g. Talk Talk) to activate the line for you. You're unlikely to be successful though.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Welcome to the MSE forums hellohello.
You have asked BT their price for (re)connection and their answer was £124.99.
Why not ask one of the other line 'providers' now in the market (e.g. Talk Talk) what they would charge?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Im moving into a new flat which has a phone line I would like to activate and use. However, BT are claiming they will have to charge me £137.99 to do this, while cable companies are offering to charge to see whether they can activate it by an alternative method. Any advice on the cheapest and best way to activate it?
Plus, as I'll only be at the property for 6months I dont want to take out a min 12 month BT line contract - are there shorter ones out there that can also get me broadband?
Thanks
K
Have Virgin Media Cable wired the area up to your flats,if not its unlikely they could provide service.0 -
Yes they did, but there seems to be a lot of conflicting talk on here as to whether it should be paid, considering the line has been used several times in the past and all wiring is still installed at my house AND the line still recieves a dial tone. I dont see why i should pay £125 when clearly its not disconnected as such.0

They tend to quote the full connection charge these days to cover their backs, even if at the end of the day they dont apply one.0 -
Ok, sorry to re-awaken this, but i've just moved in a flat that already has a BT box, no dial tone, but i can see the wire coming ouyt of my flat and going straight into the BT box. BT want to charge me 125quid, when it's clearly already installed? This just seems a little rediculous when clearly its just a case of flicking a switch - any ways around it?!0

gt94sss2 - spread connection is unavailable at the moment on the new wlr3 system, don't know when it'll be offered again but hope it will be soon.Disclaimer - I have tried to ensure that the information is as accurate as possible. However, I will not accept liability for any loss, damage or inconvenience arising as a consequence of any use of or the inability to use any information given.0

If you can, refuse to pay this indescriminate charge and stay with cable or mobile. ( this stinks of the 087etc NGN BT numbering business plan )
They may get the message sooner than you think as re-connections dwindle to a handful and complaints finally get to someone who has clout.
It is their loss not yours, unless it is a must have.
This is what happens when you split joined up businesses into seperate "profit making" enterprises. The left hand and right hand are no longer connected by a brain, just £££££ mad sales people.ac's lovechild0 -
I am in the same boat as some others - I had a BT phone when I moved into my flat about two years ago, switched to NTL, then cancelled with NTL and didn't have a landline for a bit, and now when I want to switch back to BT I am told I will be charged £125. What exactly do they need to wire up if I had BT before!? I was told because I haven't been using the phone they need to send an engineer out to reconnect it. I am dubious about this.0
