I have just checked my internet account with BT for the first time in 3 years and noticed that they have charged me for caller display even though my calls are with another provider. I know this is my fault, but because I did not remember my password and the amounts seem to be the same coming out I didnt think of checking. I know this is my fault, but due to my financial situation, I am now taking absolute control of my finances. Has anyone been in the same situation and received a refund from BT. This may have gone on for years but seems to have happened since the change over from paperless to internet billing

You say your calls are with another provider but who is your line rental with? If it's BT then you are being charged for caller display because your calls are with another provider.

Guys, related topic, I need to have a new BT cable run 30m from the road to my house (we recently did some building work that meant we had to get rid of the existing line).

We have dug the trench so all Openreach have to do is run the cable.

    The price? £1,175!

Any idea how we get that reduced because it seems massive?!?

    Hi,

Hope I'm in the right section!

A member of my family recently signed onto BT's Friends and Family Mobile service for £1.55 a month for my mum's house, so that her costs are reduced when she needs to contact family members on their mobile number.

To be honest, as pretty much all of us have got mobile phones with free call allowances, my mum would just normally give someone a "missed" call so that they could call her back on their mobile. She would only call someone's mobile directly if it was pressing or urgent; so, it's very rare.

Having read opinions online of some people saying the "connection" charge for making calls to mobiles under this service doesn't make it worthwhile to be paying this monthly subscription, and others contradicting this, I'm a bit confused.

So, I was hoping someone who has got experience of using this service can add bit of clarity for the sake of my old ma.

In her situation, even just for future reference, is it worth her paying the extra £1.55 a month for this service please?

    Thank you!

Without the mobile add-on, her calls to UK mobiles would cost:
    13.1p connection + 11.3p/minute daytime or 5.3p/minute evenings/nights.

With the add-on, her calls to UK mobiles would cost:
    13.1p connection + 7p/minute at all times.

Hence, she'd gain during the day but lose evenings/nights.

With her ring and hang up strategy, she may get away with no call cost at all or she may get stung for a one minute call every time (24.4p or 18.4p) so that'd change to 20.1p each time.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thank you for breaking it down like that!

Not that it probably makes any difference, but I forgot to mention that she is on the BT Anytime Unlimited price plan.

So, to be on the safe side, do you think it's better for her to keep the mobile add on?

    Thanks :)

Be aware that BT make their first-time customers sign- up for 18 month contracts; this is fine for most people, but my daughter has to leave her rented house after just one year as the landlord wants to sell the house. She can't find anywhere else so she's coming back to live with me ( she's epileptic and she can't handle stress very well), but now BT have said that it'll cost her £159 to cancel her contract, saying that she should have known that her lease might end after a year ( she had no idea) or she could always have a phone installed in her bedroom at my house (oh, but she'd have to sign up for another 18 months). There was no other option for her other than to pay up, but she'll never use BT again.

I've got this problem at the moment!
:) Thanks to all who post comps! :)
  • BT say that they will not charge me for the line connection - £130 if I take their BB. Is there another way to get it installed? Thanks
  • Im moving to a new house in a few weeks, the house I'm moving to had a bt phone line two weeks ago when the last owners moved out, when I rang up to get my account moved over they want to charge me £130. I can understand if it was a new build and there was no line installed but surely it can cost Bt £130 to just reactivate a line!
