Surely if you get the PO to connect the line but don't go thru with the service you are still liable for the cost of connecting the line.
We've already got Openreach stealing from the customers, getting customers to obtain a line and then not paying is just as bad.
If I got the PO to connect a line I'd actually take their phone service as it sounds pretty good i.e. free calls to mobiles at weekends and to overseas destinations etc.
And it's only a monthly contract and there are various ways of paying apart from DD.

I'd go elsewhere for broadband as I prefer monthly contracts for that and the PO is 12 month min.

I don't mind paying when I know exactly what I'm paying for and agree to it beforehand.

I don't like paying when I feel the charge has been thrust upon me dishonestly.

If you went to someone's house to fix their door after agreeing to do it for £100 and after you'd fixed it they said "I'm not paying" would that be OK with you ??????

After reading the t&c more you're still liable for the connection charge - however that charge may or may not appear on your first bill. Cancel before the start of the line rental and it *may* not appear because you'll never get your first service bill, depends how switched on they are. The idea was given to me by a post on this forum....

My point is it doesn't cost £127 to plug in a couple of wires at the exchange. If it means being devious to avoid this unnecessary charge so be it!
  • It doesn't cost McDonalds £1.29 to make a double cheeseburger.

Openreach are allowed by OFCOM to charge for it - about £60 to £65 I think. The rest goes to the line supplier for organising it and placing the order, and following up if need be.

Since Openreach is a monopoly there's no competition to lower the prices as there is with e.g. line rental and calls.

"BT ...... are required to provide a connection upon reasonable request and at uniform prices, irrespective of geographical location. This requirement is particularly valuable to customers in remote rural areas whom the market might otherwise not serve. Where installation of a new line costs £3400 or less, BT sets a standard charge (currently £55.74 + VAT)"

Maybe people would prefer being charged exactly what each connection cost, furthering the so-called digital-divide.

I recently moved into a flat that had previous tenants & I’m sure they had a BT line as I have already forwarded their post from BT onto my landlord.

I have a phone socket, I’ve plugged a phone into it and I have a dial tone, however I can’t make any calls out as it says the number is not recognised.

I placed an order with BT online on the 1st June, I was informed that there would be no charge for the reconnection and that my line would be activated on the 8th June.

On the 9th June I received an email stating that an engineer visit had been booked to setup everything up on the 21st June.

I have tried calling BT twice now to find out why I need an engineer visit, whether I will need to be at home for this & whether I will get charged for this.

In the first call I was told “They’ve booked the appointment so something needs doing”, that I wouldn’t need to be at home for the visit and that there would be no charge.

In the second call I was told they couldn’t verify the routing, that I would need to be at home and that I would be charged, but they couldn’t tell me how much.

Logically I think that this should just be a reconnection…I have a dial tone, I have a socket.

I have no objection to paying a connection fee but taking a day off work to wait for a possible engineer visit will cost me even more money. I’ve been stung by BT with this in the past in my old flat when they booked two engineer visits and didn’t turn up for either.

I really don’t know what to do next, I’ve tried calling and got two totally different answers! Any suggestions or advice please?

    Hi Lizzyp,

I would like to take a look at your order to insure that the connection charge has been raised correctly. Please could you email me your BT account details? My email address can be found by clicking on my profile. Once I have received those details, I will investigate this and reply to you directly.

    Cheers

  • OK, so I've a question regarding the BT Charges.

I'm renovating a property at the moment that has a Granny annex attached. Previous owners had Virgin in the main property and BT in the annex. There is a cable from the telegraph pole in the street running to the house, a cable running down the wall outside to a small brown junction box. Two wires lead from the box; one to the annex and one to the main house. Now the confusion: the annex phone sockets (no Masters found) have dial tones, but the Master socket in the main house is dead. There are no intermediate boxes or connections just cable - junction box - Master socket.

BT have confirmed that they are seeing a line registered to the house and that it is probably the annex but cannot see if there is a second line. They have suggested an engineers visit to 'reconnect' at the exchange. If the cable prior to the Master socket is duff, surely that's a fault of BT equipment and they should fix it for free. My interpretation is that there is a live line to the property (dial tone), but I also have a dead length of cable and they should replace it.

Would that be a correct interpretation?

Also, I want to go PO for the initial phone as I want to get O2 Home Phone and then O2 BB, can PO send an engineer or do I need to go BT? I'm assuming there will need to be a 'connection' somewhere? Sorry for the questions, I've been with NTL/Virgin for a while and haven't had to worry about these sort of things.

is there no other company that can connect you? I'm moving into a new flat soon and need the internet for my studies but BT says it will cost me £129. I'm not even bothered about the phone, just a good internet connection..
Are there any cheaper companys or would a dongle be a good idea? do they provide fast brodband coverage? and how much a month?
