Hi,
I have just spoken to BT and they claim that the offer is finished and that rge best they can do is £50 fee for an 18 month contract. Any ideas??0 -
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Does anybody know how to get BT to move an overhead line, only 4.5m above the ground level on a house site that I am looking to buy. I want to erect an extension but this line is restricting any works. I want to get it moved, preferably free of charge, but can't even get a quote as I do not yet own the site, and I don't want to buy the site unless it can be moved cheaply. The line runs from a pole in the road to a house behind, so doesn't even serve this site. Do they have any rights??? I am told they no longer have air rights, but no help from BT as to cost.
Any help with this urgently?0 -
Hi I would really appreciate some guidance as nobody at any phone providers can seem to help me!
I have just moved into a rented property. There is a phone line and when I've tried the phone, I get a dial tone. It also allows me to make calls and also recieves calls. I have tried calling 17070 from it and it gives me a number (albeit different from the number left by the landlady).
This is where the confusion begins. I have tried calling a number of different providers (including BT) who don't recognise the number and state that there isn't a phone line to my property. I don't live in a fibre optic area as (checked with Virgin). I really need broadband ASAP, but all the companies I've tried state I would need to wait in one morning and pay for a new line. But there is a line!!! Just not sure where it goes
If anybody here has any idea what may be happening, I would really appreciate some guidance. I have been unsuccessful contacting the landlord, but I'm sure she said it was with BT when we moved in and there were also a couple of letters from BT addressed to the new occupier.
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in all the previous posts and as I'm having to do this at work, I also need to be sneaky about it!
Thanks0 -
Have you tried dialling 150 and seeing which company's customer service answers?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thanks!
I'm of the mobile generation so haven't called anyone from landline in about 10yrs, only have it for broadband! It still makes me jump when someone cold calls as its such an alien sound!
I didn't realise 150 was a standard CS number.:o0 -

They will move it at your request, but charge you. This can run to quite an expense if new poles need to be provided. They *will* have wayleaves/flying wire rights for the dropwire/ariel cable. Low across you property is not an issue. Low across a defined highway / entrance would be a different matter.
Don't be tempted to chop it down, do the building works, then call in a fault - they are more than wise to that and it will just delay you and cost you more.
Costs - ball park figures: If it's a simple overhead shift (no new poles needed) around £130. If you need poles they are about £400 each. To put it underground is about £45 per metre in soft / mud rising to £95 per metre in concrete/carriageway. Those figures were good around 4 years ago!0 -
But is that a good deal?
18 month minimum term - Minimum call commitment applies – you must make at least 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month.
cheapest 'package' Unlimited Weekend Plan (£11.54 per month)
£207.72
+£29.99
=£237.71
non direct debit fee at 4.50 per quarter (x6) £27.00
TOTAL: £264.71
£14.71 a month just for the line - with no broadband - and an 18 month tie in.
Compare that to a mobile operator like O2 offering 100 free mins, free 02 to 02, unlimited texts, unlimited web for £15 a month PAYG without tie in. IMHO These Telco's need to start getting their act together and offer quality and value, not take hostages because their service and prices ain't so sexy!
Does the 02 package require a landline? I am with Virgin and it is too expensive. Nearly all other broadband providers require a land line with BT so I was interested in the BT £29.99 connection and the weekend free calls package which inlcudes 0845 and 0870 numbers - the Virgin call package doesn't include those numbers. My main need is for internet and I want to reduce my costs to £15pm. I rarely use a landline for calls as I have a virgin mobile with 300 free minutes which I am very happy with. I've tried an 02 dongle of my nephews for £15 but the useage ran out in less than 2 weeks, I have sky tv so could sign up for their free broadband if I get a BT Landline but your 02 point has intrigued me. I have an old 02 mobile phone which still works and which I top up occasionally. Your message gives me the impression that the package is a mobile phone thing as you mention texts and minutes etc but I'm a bit of a dunce with trying to sort this out just to reduce my bills! Morning,
Tried calling 150 and it just says that the number is not recognised. Apparently the number was with BT, but it still isn't recongised by them.
Anyway, yesterday I spoke to one of the Sky bods in the local shopping center who set me up with a deal which includes free connection so I have just opted for that as I got fed up of dealing with all the others!
Thanks for your assistance0
