The Post Office home phone seems quite cheap to me with free weekend calls to mobiles and the overseas calls to 40 destinations at weekends as well as the 0845 and 0870 free calls eve and weekends.

And if you can also use 18185 type providers then it sounds ideal.

The dead extension problem will have no bearing on this."

I have just taken a lease on a flat, there is a phone line and calling 17070 returns a number, after speaking to BT they said they could activate it but I would have to sign up for 1 year line rental with them, I want to get line rental and broadband with talk talk but they say they cannot reactivate the line and I would have to get a new line installed at 50 something pounds to go through them. Can I get the line activated for free and go to talk talk?

Talk Talk are not telling you the truth. They could take the line now but, as they choose to lie to you, are you sure you want to go with them?

BT's standard contract for line rental is 12 months. AFAIAA, only the Post Office do a shorter contract.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Heinz. Madasafish 30 days notice and Phone Coop 3 months in some circumstances beat BT.

If you get their free connection offer from BT what happens after 18 months ?
Can you leave at any time after you have completed the 18 months ?
  • I was with Post Office Homephone for my landline but due to a problem with my Direct Debits and a disputed bill they disconnected the phone.
The dispute is now settled but when I contacted them to reconnect they told me it would be treated as a new order and would be subject to a credit check which I failed.

I asked how I could have the line reconnected and they said that I would have to find a new provider but I don't have a dial tone on my phone so I would have to be reconnected to a BT line.

I have contacted BT and they also do a credit check.

I want to change to Sky but they say I need to have a BT line in place and I am confused because The Post Office said that there was a BT connection still at my property.

    I am confused!!

Does anyone know how I can get a dialling tone back so that I can have a landline for the Internet?

Do all companies do a credit check?

I am already a Sky TV customer so will they credit check if I ask to take their phone and internet package?

Sounds like your best bet would be Sky (as you have a TV account already, they may not do a further credit check).

However, as you now have no dial tone, it'd be a reconnection and so a charge (IIRC, Sky charge over £100) is likely to apply. Give Sky a ring.

  • I am against charges for connecting phones when your signing a contract with bt. they are providing a service and your paying for the service so why should we pay them to install their equiptment to fullfil the contract we are entering into? not like you get a caterer to supply food at a wedding then pay them to install their ovens they need to cook the food.
  • I am moving in to a new flat but am not sure whether or not they will have the phone line connected. It's only for a short let (6 months) as the landlord wishes to sell . Does anyone have any ideas what I can do if it does need connecting? Virgin does not run in the area and I really do not see the logic in paying £125 for a 6 month let, I'd be paying it back once I've left the flat and the landlord will benefit from it when he sells the flat on. I live on less than £125 a week and just cannot afford it. I'm flummoxed :o
