BT want to charge £125 approx to make the line live.
Welcome to the MSE forums rcgood.

Until the end of this month, BT will connect for nothing if you agree to an 18 month contract and make at least 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month.

You have to ask for this special offer - ask for the Customer Options Team if you get balked.

Yes you are correct about the Talktalk. yet on the phone they quoted £39.
If BT do it for free seems like a good deal?

Thanks Heinz for the link for the BT line connection special offer.
My parents are moving house in two weeks, the flat they are moving too has the line but it is not connected as the couple living their use mobiles.
My mum phoned BT to arrange a line connection and they gave her the full connection price, no mention of this offer.
They are both in their 70's
One daft question, what do they mean by ' inclusive calls' in the terms and coinditions section - customers must make at least 30 chargeable or inclusive calls every three months ?

Free connection is not offered proactively - you have to ask for it (asking to speak to the Customer Options Team is usually easiest because they appear to be best informed).

The base calls plan (the Unlimited Weekend Plan) includes calls of up to 60 minutes each to 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers at weekends, the Unlimited Evening and Weekend Plan includes calls of up to 60 minutes each to 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers evenings and weekends and the Unlimited Anytime Plan includes calls of up to 60 minutes each to 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers at any time.

    BT company representative,
Is it possible to have 2nd line put in via the 'New line free connection offer' and instead of having it for phone calls have an unlimited internet package?
If that was possible, what would be the monthly cost or running it (unlimited internet package)

Thnxs in advance ofr any help.

  • BT tried to sting me for the £122.50 that they try to get everyone who move homes with. They appear to apply a different policy in practise when you call them up to that which is stated publicly on their website.

I recently moved house and was with BT. Prior to moving I called the Home Moving service, they advised that I would be charged the £122.50 for connection of the line in the house I was moving to. When I queried the charge as the previous occupant was with BT and was also with BT broadband, therefore why a reconnection fee, their rep stated that they charge all home movers the connection fee. I stated that this policy was in contravention of that which is clearly stated on their website which states:
    Starting your move
If there's a working BT line in the property connection should be free of charge, but if the line needs to be reconnected to BT or a new line is required, a connection charge of £122.50 will apply. Our advisors will confirm this when you call.

I also stated that how do I know whether the line is working or not prior to moving to a property, and that BT are in control of when properties are disconnected. I challenged them that their actual policy of charging all customers for moving was in contravention of their written policy and that this was unfair and that I would take this up with the regulator Oftel, they immediately passed my call to a supervisor, who then agreed to waive the connection fee.

They still sent an engineer to the house I moved to for the '5 min £122.50 job' all housemovers appear to get, to ensure the line was working, which the engineer confirmed was already working. And they have also tried to charge me subsequently despite the agreement to waive.

I will be writing to Oftel with my experiences which is clearly an abuse of BT's position in the market and a cynical profiteering scam.

I am hoping that the info provided above may help others achieve the same fair outcome, and stop BT's abuse of the position they are in :naughty:.

    Nthn MONKEY
  • Why do they need to send an engineer to check that the line is working ?

You move in plug in a phone get a dialtone contact BT and tell them you have a dialtone.

Can't they do anything that needs doing at the local exchange instead of calling at your house ?

If they come to your house that gives them the excuse to charge.
