Remember BT are only interested in getting as much money from you as possible and giving minimum customer service from call centres abroad to save them money regardless of how this may inconvenience the customer.
Giving good customer service or a fair deal is something they are unwilling to do.

Look at how many years they've had at treating the customer like dirt ?

It's very hard for them to adapt.

Bt retail is same as all othe telecom providers, so they charge connection fee for any line set up. Opereach (the white van guys) own the telephone network and charge every telecom company including BT retail to provide telephone service to their clients.
Even when you dial 17070 and get the number, if the line is with another telcom company, BT will still charge you connection fee in such situation.
welcome to the world of free competitive market.

  • Our BT landline has just been disconnected because we don't use it - we don't have a phone connected because we can't afford calls. However, we do have broadband which goes through the landline connection.

We've been told the line has been disconnected due to inactivity and if we want to get it reconnected we need to pay the usual £122. Having read this thread (thanks - its really useful!), I'm going to call up this evening and try to get the free connection tdeal.

The thing is, even if we do manage to get the landline reconnected, it will still only be used for internet as we simply will not use a landline phone, so I'm anticipating that at some point in the future it will get disconnected again. But if we don't get it reconnected, not only do we have no internet but we will be obliged to continue paying the internet bills as we have a minimum contract with them.

It really frustrates me that no-one from BT even bothered to call to check whether we still used it - just because it apperars to be out of use, we are making use of it for internet which we use constantly as we work from home, and which BT has now deprived us of and is asking us to pay a fortune for.

Does anyone know whether there is a solution for this?!

The free installation offer is an 18 month contract and requires you to make a minimum of 10 chargeable OR inclusive calls each month.

If you really don't need/want to make a few calls to family or friends, all you have to do is to phone a few local takeaways at the weekend (when such calls are inclusive and therefore cost-free) and, when answered, apologise for dialling a wrong number and hang up.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The disconnection of your line "due to inactivity" does not sound right. Can you PM me your details and I will look into this for you?

i don't know why bt tries to wind me up so much!

so far this year at our current address then we've had 4 instances of crossed lines - one of which took the line out for 4 days when we were in the middle of buying a new place - added to the stress a treat!

anyhow, just phoned to move our line (been with bt for 2 years at current address, 2 years before that - so 4 year customer on same account) to the new address - sorry Mr, but that'll be £122 connection charge please because nobody has lived there in 12 months.

ok, says I, i am sure i have seen a free connection offer on the t'internet, something about a contract and then connection is free - typically couldn't find the offer while on the phone - no Mr, no such thing. ok, says I, i shall cancel.

through to cancellations and the same story, so i've now cancelled rather than moved it as i don't see why i should spend so long trying to not get stiffed for extra money.

maybe it's time to go 3g only as i can get a decent 4mb signal here which is faster than adsl!

i know at some point bt had to put the boxes and the wires in, but didn't bt used to be state owned anyway? so didn't we pay for them in the first place? and don't bt want to keep customers - i.e. why not offer me the 18 month contract and free installation to keep me as a customer? does nobody care about me?

Phone 0800 800 150 and ask for the Customer Options Team. Most of them know about the free installation offer.
