New Boards... should we change stars?

Some BB software (including vBulletin) works on 'reputation' rather than post count.

Reputation is achieved by the votes of other forum members, depending on how valuable your posts are percieved to be (or not!).

Post count encourages people to post just to say 'I agree' or 'Thanks'. It increases the amount of 'noise' on the boards and can make it harder to find the information you are looking for.

Reputation levels should mean that the opposite happens and the board becomes a more useful, although less 'chatty', place.

Also, under the current system it is possible to post only on threads in the MSA, yet still achieve a 5-star rating. Should certain forums be excluded from any form of counting??

I'd worry about a reputation system making people afraid to post incase someone doesn't agree with your opinion and punishes you for it. MSEs so popular becuase it's such a friendly place.

Also, if MSA were excluded from the postcount, it might cause the 'noise' to leak onto other boards as those who are determined to get a high postcount would post all over the place.

If stopping people posting was needed then they could put a limit on the postcount that is shown. e.g. after 1000 posts, there is no postcount under your name - it just says 1000+ though i'm not sure how popular this would be with regulars who have much more than this.

under our avatar could it note which board we post on most, something like

[glow=red,2,300]fave board MSA[/glow]

and then newbies could target people to ask advice from depending on which board they are most familiar with,

and keep post counts and star system the same,
although I like the sparkly star idea to carry on the rewards.
