  • Evening all..... long time so see....

Someone suggested I should come & have a look - despite not having been on here for aaaages I'm so touched at all the birthday wishes :) Thank you all so very much you lovely people, that's so thoughtful. I thought I'd treat myself - so I have ordered myself a brand spanking new mini which will arrive in mid/end January... !!!!!!

I haven't been very OS at all for ages in many ways, what with having finished Uni & now started work (and been adapting to that!!) but I shall re-motivate myself & try to get back up to speed with the daily thread.

So I'm afraid I have no idea what's been going on for people in recent months but big (((hugs))) to all those who need them, birthday wishes for everyone who I have missed & congratulations for any special events that have happened.

    Squiggly
    xx

    Evening all!,

happy birthday Squiddly...glad things are going well for you

Have had 3 very long phone conversations with various relatives to-day, lovely to talk to them but cut down on my 'working' time greatly, meant to hoover but didn't get to it...tomorrow maybe, but OH has a consultant's appointment at 9.45am so that will be most of the morning gone...

Roads to DGS2's school either blocked by floods to-day or covered with inches of ice, so most unpleasant driving there and back for him this afternoon....more rain to come I understand although it is freezing at present.

Put 3 machine loads of washing out to-day, will take in by degrees, just couldn't bear to think of them hanging round the house.

Tired mum...sorry to hear about your dog, very tough when it has to be done.

Zippychick....good luck tomorrow with interview....lots of deep breaths, smile and you'll be grand.

Hugs to all in need or want,

    Marie

  • OK. My name is save-a-holic, and I am a shopaholic.

I don't know how it happened and I don't know why.

I can't understand how I can be a shopaholic and have so little stuff to show for it. You'd think I'd have cupboards bursting at the seams with loads of lovely stuff that I can just plonk on ebay and earn some money back - alas not. You see, this isn't the first time I've been here. Earlier this year I decided that I was finally going to do something about this. I envisaged being able to sell all of my stuff and live in a clutter-free, zen-like existence. I did sell loads of stuff and I did pay it off my cards. I did really well actually (around £1,000 in all). I kept up the zen-like existence for around 6 months. But then, in October, I figured I'd done so well that I really deserved a treat - nothing wrong with that, surely? No, I thought not too.

So I bought a couple of things - nothing major - just a couple of books here and there (totalled 15 in all but it just didn't seem that many when you were just buying them one at a time), a couple of bracelets (3), an angel statue (to help me in my money-saving pledge), a couple of pairs of trousers (M&S £25 each - I need the longer length), a dog ornament (it looks just like my beloved springer spaniel, Sam, so I just HAD to have it), 'treats' when out food shopping (which basically doubled the food bills), some plants (they were for the house - so they don't count). Life was good! :o)

My overdraft limit is £1440. During my earlier frugality I'd managed to get the balance down to -£690 so I knew that I had a really good cushion of £750. There's no way I'm anywhere near there so just a couple of treats and then jump straight back onto the frugality wagon..... Sounds good to me. Very organised, very methodical, very 'in control'.

But then I got THE letter from the bank "Your account is "£1,634.77 overdrawn". What?! I haven't spent THAT much!!!! How can I have so little to show for such a cleverly disguised blow-out of £944.77. The odd book, the odd luxury shampoo, the odd lunch.... how did it all add up to THAT??? What have I got to show for nearly £1,000?

I realised that it was time to take control (again), time to deal with this problem once and for all - I spent 3 hours going through all of my statements and receipts to get a birds eye view of my finances. It looked like this:

    Barclays account - -£1,634.77 (limit £1,440) 16.68% APR
    A&L account - -£1,342.39 (limit £1,400) £5pm usage charge
    Halifax Credit Card - -£1,224 (limit £1,600) 18.98% APR
    Post Office Credit Card - -£1,152.68 (limit £1.800) 0% APR til 31.12.09
    Virgin Credit Card - -£1,764.00 (limit £2,000) 14.89% APR
    Barclaycard - -£1,590.81 (limit £1,600) 6.8% APR

All of these were at their limits when I started earlier in the year so I can see the progress I made then - £1.326.12 (it would have been £2,270.89 if I hadn't had my little 'accident' with the spending..... but it's no good crying over split milk.

Onwards and upwards. I will get my finances sorted - and this time I MEAN IT.......
Lightbulb moment: -£9,954.31 Current Debt: £0

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.

    Afternoon everyone:wave:

I've had a fairly busy day. I've done the food shopping, almost finished the Christmas shopping, made a chocolate and hazelnut cake for a birthday, made flapjacks for school and prepared tea ready to fling together before I go to my French class.

Tea will be smoked mackerel, leek and cheese toasts (mashed mackerel, cheese, cream and cooked leeks spread on toast and grilled) served with a winter salad of chicory, red cabbage, oranges, red onion and walnuts.

Lunchboxes had square white bread sandwiches (loving my Pullman tin!) with cheese in them, apples and chocolate muffins.
I had super yummy leftover chicken and barley soup.

    Breakfast was porridge and sultanas.

I've been having fun crocheting over the weekend. I've made a jacket for a plant pot and some granny squares. I want to make a garland of stars now I've seen Lucy's.I think they'll look great over my fireless fireplace.

& will it be birthday cake today:D:D:D:D:D

    Happy birthday Thriftlady
