Anyone got experience of contraceptive implant removal?

Have had mine in and out a few time's i found it takes ages to get bk to normal.
i must be a baby then cause im reallly hurt when i had mine out..

I had mine taken out last year, as we are ttc too, and it took around 6 months for my cycle to return to normal

I've had 3 out and 4 in (if that makes sense).
It doesn't hurt as they use a local anesthetic which was actually the most painful thing (which wasn't much, a sharp scratch).

I was looking as she cut the arm and tried to pull it out, she couldn't pull it out and she asked me to look away! This was on my last time and it was fine took a while but she got it out eventually and there was more bruising than the previous times, but didn't hurt and if you looked away you wouldn't see anything. I will stress that this was a rare case, usually the come straight out! (thats what i was told anyway and my previous ones have come straight out no problem!)

So don't worry about having it out. I think since i had my last one put in, i have had 2 periods. One 8 months in and one 18 months in, no other side effects.

Can't comment on ttc as I'm not and when my implant is due out (April 10) i will get another inserted!

One thing i will mention is you may need to book your implant removal a few months in advance. I tried to make an appointment to have one taken out and one put in about 3 weeks before it was due, the nearest appointment they could give me was 4 months later! (not good as i had to rely on other contraception, condoms which split 3 times and I had to have the morning after pill 3 times.) Because of this i was advised to book a few months ahead of my next renewal, but this could just be my area. They said it was because removal is classed as minor surgery and not many doctors/nurses can perform it whereas putting a new one in was easy and more people were trained to do it! I have also unofficially heard that its because removal is much more expensive for the NHS than inserting one!

I had one put in and I had constant period for a year and a half so I opted to have it removed. Couldn't get half of the sticks out as the skin had grown round them - I had to have a general anaesthetic to get them out which has left 3 scars - entrance scar, scar for attempt at first removal (got 2 sticks out) and then scar for final removal. NEVER again!

But my periods returned to normal immediately - thank goodness!

Was bleeding pretty much constantly whilst on it, but just before having it removed was given the injection. Procedure was a little uncomfortable and it left a scar. Period was for about a week after then nothing (due to the injection)

I had mine taken out in August. There was still a year left but I was having constant periods so decided to have it removed. The procedure was simple, a local anaesthetic and I didn't feel a thing. I do have 2 scars on the inside of my arm - one from where they put it in and one from where they took it out (not sure why they didn't use the same).

I had to make two appointments to have it out. One to confirm with the doctor that I definitely wanted it out (even though I knew that before I had the appointment) then a second appointment with doctor & nurse which I waited about 3 weeks for as doctor who removed them only worked two days a week!

It's nothing getting it out, Im a big baby and I managed it. I had a normal period the following month so I think my body adjusted pretty quickly to having the removal.

Hate to be the negative one.

Mine was a nightmare to get out, my own doctors surgery couldn't do it as the doctor who did them had left so had to go to FPC. The woman who saw me was awful, she was so full of herself and went on about how she trains people to do it and how most people make a big hole to get it out but I was so lucky to get her as she was so experienced that it would be the tiniest hole and done so quickly I wouldn't notice it.

She gave me local anaeseptic and started trying to get it out, 15 minutes later she's still trying, moaning how it's not her fault, it was put in at the wrong angle and it was too bendy, when it shouldn't have been. She then got someone else in to help her who she was so patronising to, I felt quite embarrassed for this lady who was nice and trying to help but wasn't really being allowed to. By this time I could feel what was happening, told this woman 3 times before she said she'd use some more local. They both tried again, one pinching the end of it and one trying to catch it....honestly it was like listening to a comedy duo.

In the end they gave up and this woman went on and on about how it wasn't her fault. I was really polite and didn't complain or anything as thought maybe it wasn't really her fault...what do I know!

I had to book another appointment for the following week with a doctor who could make a bigger cut than this other lady was allowed to. Over the next few days my arm was covered in bruising and quite uncomfortable. Went back a week later, saw doctor and was told I shouldn't have come back for at least 3 weeks because of the bruising and was sent away......Back again 3 weeks later....doctor was off sick and they said they'd rang me to tell me...so wasted trip again.

Eventually the following week the doctor removed it, local jab and was out in about a minute. She said it was in a good place to pull out, one of the easiest she'd ever done.

What a palava but I still had another one put in, just hope it's easier to get removed next time...I think I was just unlucky.

The thing I hadn't realised is that your doctor does let you know when it runs out, I'd assumed they would send me a reminder and mine went a couple of months over before I remembered to check the date on the card, luckily no pregnancy but definately something to keep an eye on.

hiya had mine out in august, i think it hurt. my bodys only just getting back to normal now

Hi Had mine out in Nov 2001, body took 2 months to get back to normal and fell pregnant in July 2002.
