A question for the women ....

  • I don't really wear makeup. I draw my eyebrows in some days cos they are overplucked and if I look even more tired than usual I will put some concealer under my eyes. So all the makeup I do have is like 10+ years old cos I bought it while I was growing up and never used it up.

I cut my hair myself so no spending there. I don't use styling products on it.

I don't wear perfume that often though I'm trying to wear it more often (not cos I smell...), again all the perfume I have has been accumulating for years so no need to buy any now, I'm trying to use stuff up.

When it comes to toiletries I do buy good ones. I like natural ones with a minimum of chemicals and I will never ever buy anything that may have been tested on animals. I mostly stick to two companies, Lush and MMU. I am actually looking into making some of own though, eg scrubs are easy and really really cheap to make. So in general I think I spend less than I used to.

    I
I wear my hair long (which is probably not a good idea at my age, but whatever) so I have my hair trimmed at Supercuts about once a year.

I never intend to wear my hair short, and I've recently convinced my mother to grow hers a little. I'm going to be an old lady who puts her hair up. I think that looks rather lovely really...I have a dear friend who is in her eighties who puts her hair up every morning before going for a horse ride. If I age like that I'll be very content.

I have never had long hair - I've got thick, naturally curly hair, if I grow it I look like a witch. OH keeps the broomstick in the garage just in case.

I get my hair cut every 6 or 8 weeks, I won't tell you how much it costs - my sister nearly choked on her tea when she found out. But it's worth it - it takes minutes to look presentable.

The lady who cuts my hair said to me on my first visit about 4 years ago - do you want staid and middle aged or sharp and modern?

I didn't choose staid and middle aged.

But I have always wanted long hair - but getting there is just too painful - 'cos I can't do hair.

When I was younger I used to go into Fenwicks and try on all the long wigs - even the blond ones - though my hair is dark brown - my sisters used to be hysterical - I looked hideous!!
  • Judging by some of the replies,ITV are looking for the lead role in Draculas daughter.

I've never been into makeup. Never really bought much. I'd be rubbish at it and look hideous.

I have an eye liner about 5 years old, lippy is about 10 years old (I'd love to get a new one but haven't ever managed to colour match it), foundation stuff is about 4 years old, mascara's about 2 years old, eye shadow's about 8 years old.

    Total cost: £7

PN - you need to throw the lot out as it does have a shelf life you know!! Especially mascara, you could get all sorts of infections.

Personally I now feel that I wear make up more than before because I am getting older!! I feel more human with it on and my hair done. I spend about 10 a month on make up and £80 every 3 months on my hair. I've got !!!!!! else left to look forward to!

Edited to say, I do have a thing about No7 skincare.. I stock pile it when it goes on special offer when I can. And as I am developing dark circles and bags under my eyes I have a bit of an obsession about special dark eye creams which cost a fortune but have done sod all.

I wouldn't say I wear a lot of makeup really, don't put anything on the majority of my face, just eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. However I have tons of makeup most of which I've never used... unsure where it came from, expect I pinched a lot of it from my older sister years ago lol, also some makeup I get as freebies... I never spend any money on makeup lol

    Oh extra information required:j

My Ma is a dedicated Elizabeth Arden user and I tend to buy their stuff by the bucketload too. I have a typical celtic complexion, very pale and dry and EA' s products seem to do the job better for me. Cheaper stuff just seems to sit on the top of my skin so it is pointless buying it. I was interested in LIR's post about the castor oil thing because I have been thinking of trying it.

I have never found a foundation that suits my skin and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I bought an epilator and once you get past the pain it works really well. Saves me a fortune on waxing.

Hair. I used to be able to sit on it but have gradually been getting it cut shorter and shorter. I am currently blonde but that is definately subject to change. I haven't seen my own colour in a decade, and from what little I remember, I am mousey blonde :o

I need to do something about my clothes. I seem to veer madly between frumpy and just plain silly. I have serious issues with my body. I am a natural Monroe shape who longs to be Audrey Hepburn

I was anorexic in my early twenties ( long boring story) and my metabolism is pretty much shot so I constantly walk a knife edge between staying a reasonable size and not tipping back into an eating disorder. Like any addiction, it never really leaves you.

My DD was chubby as a small child (as was I) but I was extremely careful never even allude to her size. Barbie was banned from my house. One of the few things I have ever stood up to my mother about was my daughters weight when she was younger. I feel extremely strongly about the pressure young girls are put under to be unnaturally thin.

Victoria Beckham should be hung, drawn and quartered.
Retail is the only therapy that works
  • Before I had children I used to spend quite an obscene amount on my appearance. I had my hair trimmed and highlighted every 6 weeks and my eye cream cost £80 and used to last around 6 months

I still wear make up and perfume every day but I get my hair cut and highlighted about every 4 months now and never get it blow dried afterwards which saves about £20.

I don't buy expensive creams any more and can honestly say that I don't notice any difference in my skin. The older I get the more realistic my expectations are. Even if I was still working I'd rather buy Boots creams and save up for a facelift when it all goes south than spend £200 on some supposed wonder cream. I cringe when I think of the money I wasted on products that did nothing whatsoever, I was a marketing man's dream.

I have a huge perfume "wardrobe" and always ask for my favourites for Christmas or for my birthday so I rarely spend money that way.

As for other toiletries I always buy in bulk so I can take advantage of Bogofs.

My make seems to last longer than it used to. Although I still wear make up every day I wear a lot less - I'd look pretty stupid going to toddler groups in bright red lipstick - somehow it only goes with power suits or a little black dress.

My hair isn't very thick any more, but it is insanely curly. :) I can't imagine trying to manange my hair ithout some weight through length! You have my admiration!

Wage slave, what sort of skin do you have? :) I tend to like (besides my Laura Mercia mineral powder foundation) Chantecaille.

I never throw somehing powder based thats unfinished away...I have stuff of mother;s from the sixties...but yes, mascara a chuck (partly because I buy a new one though). In fact, I have some ancient lipsticks and pencils too.
