'typically English' snack for 25 children? Help!

    hun - how old are the kids? nursery yes? they aint gonna care as long as it tastes nice! and if the teachers arent sure? say they are regional variations!

    Flapjacks are dead easy - for 25 small kiddies, you would need:

    250g butter
    250g sugar
    2 tablespoons golden syrup (sirop de sucre roux - but come on, you live in Normandy, you should be able to find Tate & Lyle in a decent supermarket!)
    300g oats (flocons d'avoine - you can get Quaker Oats in France if you can't get an own brand)

    Melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a saucepan over a low heat until the sugar is dissolved (it never dissolves completely, don't knock yourself out). Stir in the oats. If it looks very runny you can stir in a few more - I generally use Tesco value oats and find I can add up to 50g more sometimes. You can also add chocolate chips or nuts (but watch for allergies). Put into a greased tin and bake in a preheated oven gas mark 3 for 35 mins until golden brown. It will be bubbly still and look like it won't stick together. Don't worry. Allow to cool slightly, then mark out bars or squares. Allow to cool completely in the tin, then cut into squares or bars (if you don't mark it out while it's hot, you'll have one huge flapjack that you have to break bits off).

    You will be the toast of the Maternelle! (Either that or they'll say bleurgh, j’aime pas ça - kids are so lovely, aren't they?)
  • Hi all - I really need some inspiration please.

    We live in France and at my 4 year olds school the parents supply the mid-morning snack on a rota basis. This is great, each month we are basically told what to provide for all 25 kids.

    Anyhow for December the teacher has decided I can take in something 'typically English, some sort of cake, custard or surprise'!!!???

    Normally I would have done a couple of big jellies as this is cheap and fun and 'typically English' but I only have one packet of jelly left.

    I have got half a tin of Bird's custard if that gives anyone any inspiration!?

    So what can I make for 25 kids that is fairly easy, typically English oh and cheap!!

    A while back we had a visitor from France and had a BBQ, I made trifle for dessert and the young lady was blown away by the trifle, she said she had never seen or heard of such a thing. It caused her much delight and she took many photographs because she was absolutely fascinated by it. :D

    No time to mature mince for mince pies so that's a no - will def get organised and make some next year.

    apple pie - make individual ones in bun tins like mice pies but fill with stewed apple.
