OK do you have CCleaner? if you do run it and see if IE works after that. If not try this:
Open Internet Explorer > Tools >Internet Options > Security > Click ‘trusted
sites’ icon >Click Sites > uncheck ‘require server verification’
Then add following sites :
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com.0 -
tried the second option, didnt work, just got the same message. I dont know what ccleaner is, and a search for files/folders didnt find anything
can i just check as well, when i downloaded IE8 - i didnt get a window saying run or anything - i am not convinced i have done that right?0 -

ok, this is driving me mad now! Still doesnt work (after cleaning) - do i actually need this, or can i continue using firefox?0 -
Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK. In the Currently installed programs list, click Windows Internet Explorer 7, or click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then click Remove.0

Follow these instructions:
Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP- From the Start menu, select Run.
- In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
- Select the OK button.
- Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
- Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
- From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
- Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
- Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
- In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
- In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
- Click the Search button.
- In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
- Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
- Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
