Double Yolker Eggs!

Used to be able to get double yokers at Waitrose?not sure if they still do them, no harm in asking!

My local butchers sells double yoker eggs all the time, hadn't realized they were rare.

Come and visit Bewdley in Worcestershire and buy your eggs by the dozen!

I buy XXL eggs from a local farm and they are almost always double yolkers. Not sure how they do it, but the eggs are huge. The whites don't whip up very well though so best used for other things.

I've kept chickens for years and can co-oberate that young chickens are prone to laying double yolkers. However, I understood that they were banned from shops by an EU directive (like straight cucumbers and all that guff). My Dad buys guaranteed dy from Chester Market. Eggs can easily be scanned and dy are used for baking etc, and as I understood it, not sold in the shops. Obviously there is a demand for dy (I love 'em!), so maybe this particular directive has been modified so that they can be sold as a speciality. I usually find that the dys my chickens lay have a sort of ridge around the middle - almost like two eggs stuck together.

Whilst on the subject of eggs - I do occasionally get tiny eggs, about pigeon size, and these generally have no yoke at all! Also, d'you know that, just like humans, chickens are born with all the eggs that they'll ever lay, already there inside them - so once they stop laying for any length of time - that's your lot - and sometimes theres'! I've only got two right now, the others either expiring due to old age, or got by rotten old Reynard, and altho my recently adopted Henrietta layed the day I brought her home in a box, there's been nothing since (but I think the crows or magpies are getting them).

Happy dy hunting! Oooh - have you tried duck eggs - they're lovely - with huge yolks, and not strong tasting at all.

Yes it does happen.

I worked in an egg place and saw a few, not many tho, but did see a lot of double yolkers which were usually very large eggs, but sometimes they look like 2 eggs joined together.

I have also seen eggs that look like breasts with nipples and one that looked like a part of the male anatomy.

You also get eggs laid with no shells, they look like a ball of jelly.

Also get these balls of jelly with another egg inside that has a shell, and eggs with another egg inside it.

Humans can have identical triplets only when one of quadruplets is unviable. In the case of yolks, the eggs should be unfertilised so there is no question of unviability.

I bought 2 boxes of eggs from Morrison's supermarket (Boxes of 9) and had 4 double yokers in one box and 2 double yokers in the other. Hadn't seen one for years and had forgotten that they exsisted until now. Got quite excited too - how sad eh?

We have kept hens for a long time and we haven't yet figured out how to persuade them to lay double yokers routinely! One observation is that they appear to be slightly more common from "more elderly" ladies! Battery hens often don't live to become elderly as they become less productive, so maybe mass producers aren't the right place to go to get the double yokers!

I buy mine straight from the farm (straight from the hen before they are graded and stamped and sent to the farm shops NAUGTY ME! ) and I get the biggest eggs that i can find. The best time for double yokes is as you say Churchmouse is when they are new hens for about 3 months we get double yokes in every egg! We cant get the eggs into an egg box so we have to have a tray but they only just fit in! My kids love to see if will be a double or not! Weired coincidence I am eating my boiled eggs this morning and .... NO DOUBLE YOKES very sad! never mind.
when baking I use double quantities of the flour, sugar and butter to 3 big double eggs and my cakes are scrum-my!

Our local Tesco sell Double Yokers as a specific line now. Think its packs fo 10 but a tad pricey at £1.79 or something IIRC.
