  • I'd suggest trying your local farmer's market, if you have one near you - the Leeds one has a stall where they often sell boxes of double yolker eggs. And they are LOVELY! You might want to take a look at http://www.farmersmarkets.net/ to see if there's one near you. Good luck!

I get my eggs from a friend who keeps hers free roaming (she lives in a tiny, tiny village). One particular hen nearly always lays double yolkers and the eggs are that big you can tell straight away.

I get my eggs from a friend who goes directly to the farmer. The hens are free range, and the eggs always taste lovely. Every so often a new lot of hens are brought in and that's when I get boxes of almost all double yolkers. I always buy the extra large so that fits in. When my friend asked the farmer why we were getting double yolkes he said it was because the hens were only young, with raging hormones who didn't really know what they were doing!!:rotfl: Must say after a few weeks of almost all DY they settled back to mostly single with the odd double.

if you use a double yolker in baking
does it count as one egg or two?
One shouldn't make a difference but using a large quantity in a recipe would alter it considerably

A few weeks ago we bought some extra large eggs from ASDA and all six were double yolkers.
The extra large ones are mostly double.

    Hi

I was born on a duckfarm and was there till I was 13. Used to collect the eggs and size them etc helping my dad. All they do is put them under a special lamp and see the yolks through that, so they will know if double or not if thats what they are looking for.

There is no special breed of bird that lay only double yolkers. Some lay more than others but really is just luck of the draw unless stated when buying them.

One of my four hens lays the occasional double yolker. You can tell when she has because the egg is an absolute whopper (nearly twice the size that she normally lays)...and then I don't get another egg out of her for the next couple of days. Not that I blame her! :)
    Good, clean fun.... :D
