Double Yolker Eggs!

  • Thanks for your replies everyone. I am now determined to try and find some for my kids to see!! I'm sure they think I am just making it up!! My Dad used to get trays of double yolkers when I was little (in the 60's) and he also used to get duck, turkey and goose eggs (he was a chef). I used to like the duck eggs, but would never try the goose eggs!! Another strange thing which is in the back of my mind was that sometimes he used to get chicken which still had the eggs inside them, which I thought was gross.

I too bought a box of Lions eggs from Tesco last week and 7 out of the 10 were double yolkers. All were used in cakes but I wish one had been for a fried with some toast to dip in. Yum yum!!!

Ok, hate to be the one to be contrary ... but I can say that Sainsbury's do sell special "double yoker" eggs (I'm assuming, this can be determined by a scan ;) ) guaranteed 1/2 dozen double yolkers. Obviously you pay more for the priviledge, but buy them you most certainly can :D:D:D

At Christmas I bought half dozen double yolkers from the reduced counter as a 'surprise/treat/con' for my boys. It was hilarious to watch their face when every single egg I cracked was a doubly and I pretended to be absolutely dumbfounded. Interestingly, it was my youngest who sussed me out - far too clever for his own good (l'il spoilsport!). ;)

    So, to answer:-

Double Yolkers @ Sainsbury's ;):D (No I am not affiliated with Sainsburys)

The weblink above suggests not. I too had a box where at least 4 out of 6 were double yokers. (The other 2 were cracked into something before I noticed). I fried 3 of them but only 1 of them broke nicely and gave use two little yolks. My son was very impressed and we took photos!

if you use a double yolker in baking
does it count as one egg or two?

    Depends on the weight.

If you are making a Victoria Sponge, weigh the egg and add the same weight in flour, butter and sugar; if needed add a drop of milk until you have a dropping consistency.

Often, but not always, a double yolker will equal a large egg, but much depends on the breed that laid it.

Sorry, I know that's not a definitive answer, but because eggs can weigh differently, there *is* no definitive answer, brokenwings.

I've seen double yolkers for sale in both Morrisons and Sainsburys. I keep chickens, 10 of them are layers and from the 7 to 8 eggs I get daily, I'd say we get a double yolker once every 2 months or so. We call them Behemoths! :D

bw - they don't *do* anything to the eggs to make them lay double yolkers :o

It's just like humans having twins, it happens ;)

Truly, I know people who work as "poultrymen" and while some of the ethics might be debateable, the idea of forcing a hen to lay double yolkers isn't on the agenda ;)

Also, as a hen owner, I'd be very happy when my chook is well enough to lay one decent egg, let alone a double yolker! Poor mite is very run down from her time as a battery hen, so honestly, I believe I know what I'm saying on this front. :o If there was a magic ingredient/procedure, I'd know about it!
