The box that's been installed is a box that does not have a viewing slot/card reader and gets only free channels.

What I'd like to find out is why on earth would anyone be sold a box without a viewing card slot?

We'd never heard of it before.

Because that type of box is a FTA satellite receiver, not a Sky satellite receiver. Entirely different things. The former does not require a viewing card, so no card slot. If this installer has replaced a Sky box with a FTA receiver then he's either a con-man or an idiot. Can your father still get the Sky EPG on this box? Did he get it before?
To unravel this conundrum you really need to tell us the make/model of the box (look on rear or base)-and ideally the same for the previous box. Without this info no-one can advise you further.

If it's not a Sky box, then it's a Freesat box, which needs no card.

Edit - Just to add that I don't know what the box is, as according to the Freesat website, they don't show Sky news?

Correct. But is Sky news available on an FTA receiver? if so, it's one of those, or a Sky box with a cunningly concealed slot!
Any Sky Eire customers around who can give some input on this?

On a non-sub box, you still get Sky news. You do lose Sky Sports News though.

Sky use the same boxes in Eire and the UK. Sky News is FTA and can be viewed on virtually any digital satellite receiver - FTA, Sky or freesat.

All this guesswork is getting absolutely nowhere, we need more info from the original poster on anything printed on the receiver - front, back or underneath.

Thanks but it is not a Freesat box, Freesat told me that they are not allowed to have the Sky News channel. It is not a Sky box either and yes Sky News is a free to air channel (but I don't think any other Sky channels are)

Sorry macman, I still don't have the model of the new box that you asked.

He had a Sky box before which had free channels but no viewing card or Sky subscription but it did haveviewing card slots.

I was only going by the Freesat site (and others), which doesn't list Sky News.

I did see that it can be added manually though.

OP needs to ask his father if he can get the Sky EPG or not. And the make/model of the current box. Otherwise we're just speculating.
A picture of this box would be even better.

    Thanks macman

    What is Sky EPG please?

As just said, still cannot get access to the new box.

There's only one thing for it then - everyone round James' grandfathers for tea and cake then.:D

Assuming macman hasn't already replied by the time I submit this, the EPG is the Electronic Programme Guide that comes up when you press TV Guide on a Sky remote.
