You still need to tell us what sort of box it is (and what sort of box he had before-presumably he stil has the old box).
Why were the box and LNB changed? A secondhand standard Sky box costs almost nothing. Unusual to fit a secondhand LNB, as they're cheap enough new.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Indeed, he possibly got it from a seller on eBay etc. from Ireland.

He obviously hasn't re - tuned it, nor has he shown your Grandfather how it works, it seems.

    Thanks Inactive

Does that indicate that it was secondhand as it was sold as brand new and cost a lot of money?

That is a major concern but our original major concern was that the box supplied was one without a viewing card slot as we had never heard of such a thing.

The question is why on earth would anyone be sold a box without a viewing card slot?

It could well be new, but destined for Ireland and pre-tuned at the factory for that market.

If it does not have a card slot, it is a Free to Air Receiver which can be purchased new for around £30 ish.

    Screwfix sell the whole kit for £39.99;

Thanks but we are still puzzled as to why on earth would anyone be sold a box without a viewing card slot?

We have never heard of such a thing.

    Thanks spike7451

The box that's been installed is a box that does not have a viewing slot/card reader and gets only free channels.

What I'd like to find out is why on earth would anyone be sold a box without a viewing card slot?

We'd never heard of it before.

Sorry, just saw your PS. Not in Ireland at all, am in Surrey area
  • Does the box say SKY anywhere on it?

    Thanks but no.

It is nothing whatsoever to do with Sky.

It has no viewing card slot and has only free channels.

What I'd like to find out is why would anyone be sold a box without a viewing card reader which we'd never heard of before.

What would be the purpose of having one?

There are as many different makes and models of digiboxes without card readers as there are with them. All the BBC/ITV freesat boxes do not have card readers although one or two have slots where a card reader can be added. Throughout Europe there are many satellite broadcasters which are subscription free and thus require no card reader. In Germany for instance it is more common to see receivers without card slots.

If it's not a Sky box, then it's a Freesat box, which needs no card.

Edit - Just to add that I don't know what the box is, as according to the Freesat website, they don't show Sky news?
