Haven't Sold on ebay for a while..Well I nearly choked!

Abit of a rant...

Been a private seller on ebay for a number of years and I normally sell reasonable value (£300-£600 per item)personally used electronics items that I no longer want.

Anyway, haven't sold anything for 11 or so months, but I had a item to sell so I'd thought I'd stick it on ebay and worked out 'roughly' in my head what I should get after fee's, based on similar items I had sold before. (thought there might be some minor fee increases)

Only nearly choked on my bagel:eek: when item sold for £350, to see ebay charging £35 final value fee as well as Paypal taking another £13.

To say I was gobsmacked is an under statement. £48 on £350 thats like 13.71% charge with paypal plus listing fees on top.

I remember when it used to be a tiered system and at least then it was slightly more reasonable, but this is a ripoff.

I mean I sell at a loss anyway as item has been used but how are regular sellers making a profit on such high fees? Its extortionate.

To top it off I had 2 idiots that had just opened up a new account false bidding on my item for thousands in the last half hour of the auction, remained like that for about 20mins. I have a range of restrictions on who can bid, but newbie idiots can still bid.

Luckily I spotted it with minutes left and canceled the bids and blocked them, otherwise this was a relist job:mad:. However I'm sure this might of put off some potential bidders, as this is when most interest is shown.:(

And to top it off the Buyer has paid via Paypal and its been put on hold whilst Paypal reviews it. (not looking good).

It would cost you more at a standard auction house with less footfall (17% and upwards). Other decent selling places also have higher charges. There are some sites with lower fees but they also have 10% and below the amount of customers Ebay has so your selling price would likely be less.

Would you have got the same price if you'd sold it in freeads. I doubt it.
  • I think the perspective here is to remember that you get what you pay for.

But we can also learn from this example not to assume fees, and to check before we list.

    Quite possibly.

I've had very good results from gumtree.

People should remember that ebay is not the only selling venue in the world...

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

Except, of course, that Gumtree is owned by eBay!

Yep, It was an iPhone and they sell like hotcakes. I normally always sell my stuff on ebay and it had become a routine, looks like that routine is about to change.
  • you echo my sentiments entireley , 10 % to ebay plus paypal fees , its a bit steep,
but thinking about it i agree with other bloke as to amount of people see what your selling
last week i bought some chairs out of local paper wife didnt like them so put them on ebay , i was lucky that someone hundreds of miles away wanted exact same chairs , i bought the chairs for 180 and they sold for 511 , also put some other stuff on that i was clearing out i know owe ebay about £90 , and paypal also held up the payment on the chairs waiting 24 hrs before allowing me to request them to pay to my bank account , now have to wait another few days till i can get the money , i think the only option now is to factor in the percentage ebay takes and have a higher starting price , which in fact pushes up all the prices for things on ebay ,
i am now looking at other sites as has been suggested although ebay is the one i most look at before buying something just to get an idea of what something is worth
my favourite food is spare ribs
