that's an interesting bit of maths shaz! £5k overpaid saves you £200 in a year. So if you'd borrowed that at 0%, theoretically you're £200 better off at the end of that year.

But perhaps someone better at these things will be along to answer :)

mumtoomany thanks for that tip :) I'm a british gas customer, so maybe I'll see if they'll let me have a meter. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I've been snaffling away the christmas leftovers into a format that's frugal as my MFW strategy this week. Example, DH gave me a lovely piece of brie. Easy way, 2 ploughman's lunches cost £1.62 each. Thoughtful frugal way, pasta with a brie and herb sauce, 28p per person portion :money:.

Trying to eek the goodies out over the max number of meals is my current MFW strategy. Have made 6 portions of beef n ale casserole and have turned 2 into pies. 9 portions of pork in cider casserole. My feezer is looking healthy. (But not as full as shaz's!)

• £200 for a bit of effort sounds good to me!!! of to investigate good 0% cards......

I have been stretching holiday leftovers too last night i made a lush pasta dish with some leftover blue cheese which was the free one from a BOGOF and some smoked salmon trimmings left from xmas day brekkie(with scrambled eggs and bagels- our family tradition!)

My freezers may be full but mainly of raw ingredients not meals which i hope to change this year but going to need bigger pans/slowcooker and new tupperware first and i need to keep hubby away from the leftovers .............if i cook double i never end up with as much left as i should as he thinks "it needs eating up"

Hi ISOM nice to see you

did manage to make some ham and turkey pies with leftover bits(and wine) which are stashed away

Got loads of peppers and cranberries to dehydrate at Lincoln market today icould have bought much more but restricted myself to £2 worth

Did buy £10 of books(5) in the charity shops for uni but i get this reimbursed also stocked up on colgate toothpaste in p0undl@nd as it was 2 for £1

Having a ploughmans as i type and a dry new year and early bed i hate the celebrations(mainly down to unhappier times with my glaswegian ex)

Looking forward to the challenges ahead though

See you all next year!

• What can I make?
I have loads of pasta and rice, but have just found some blue cheese and King Prawns that need using.

Can anyone help.

BTW the prawns have a week left (frozen) but the cheese needs to be eaten in the next few days - so they don't have to be together!:rotfl:

Will constantly lurk for further inspiration and piccies of course- no wonder ISOM goes all gooey over him.

Tesco points addict you could do pasta with a blue cheese sauce and the rice with prawns and a while sauce or with curry and some tinned toms if you have some? Popped in to look at Fergus piccies...he is edible! No doubt about it. Just popped in (as am nowhere near being an mfw...will be an age as a dfw first ol) to look at piccy mentioned by bob (nosey me)...yup hes yummy and Weezl I am amazed at the overpayment but not wholly suprised cos you are so good/discipined at being frugal...as am I until sommat, well anything really, makes me wander off ...can resist anything but temptation!!

• i secon ISOM's suggestions but just to add blue cheese cn be frozen i made a lovely white.cheese sauce from blue cheese the other day and added a leek and some smoked salmon trimmings.........lush

could also stir fy the prawn in onion, garlic, chilli and lots of butter and stir into cooked spaghetti we have this reugualarly made with mussels (farm foods) and it is lovely

Prawn biryani , the blue cheese could be used to make a fishcake type thing with mash covered in breadcrumbs .....a blue cheese croquette if you like. when we were in Belgium recently croquettes came with all kinds of fillings. I think the old english term is rissoles if you want to serach for a recipe.

morning shaz and hello to isom and bob, lovely to see you over here

shaz, can you pm me your address I've got a book here I think you'll love :)

Frugal news and updates:

MIL had an emigrating friend's singer sewing machine gathering dust in her garage, so I am now the proud owner of that :) just have to fathom out the instruction booklet :( not my most gifted area, which is unusual for a geek like me :)

I shall take a leaf out of isom's book and try to make many of my presents this year. This could require a lot of forethought, as the first 2 months after giving birth will doubtless be a craft-free zone and life with 2 small boys may not be full of quiet crafting time

grocery budget needs reeling in after christmas. Not that it went hugely mad, but we had visitors at every meal except one between 23rd dec and 2nd Jan, so that made a little bit more dentedness to the budget!

Will inventory cupboards and freezer later, but really need to have 3 NSDs in a row (and DH does too!)

Have given up and subscribed as if nowt else can get/give recipes!! Re the pasta one of my faves is plain pasta with butter and black pepper - really is scrummy! Weezl, Rachel Allen did a pasta recipe with no machine - cut chopped on work surface so will have a bash - after sterilising due to puss!! When you did yours did you use pasta/00 flour or normal?
