I really don't do babies, but that is one cute boy, he looks so angelic!
Glad Santa bought you a leccy monitor, what is a Sun ~Jar please?
:eek:At the sky box leccy use Thrifty, trouble is if you turn it off it all goes horribly wrong! From what you the say the microwave is bad, do you think it would be cheaper to run the gas hob to heat say, beans/soup etc, and perhaps even cheaper to boil water on the hob too (rather than the kettle that is)?????. How do I work out how much energy my gas hob uses??

Hello weezl & all other contributers to this thread :santa2:
I'm hoping to join the MFW board in the next couple of weeks, just trying to work out where to startbut this thread is a great incentive & I just wanted to say 'well done'!! :T Such a fantastic achievement, especially with a young, & growing (in more ways than one), family.
Weezl, Fergus looks such a lovely little boy, you must be so proud. Good luck with the new bump.
TPA, I've seen the Sun Jar advertised on Amazon, as far as I remember you put it on your window-sill & it soaks up the sunshine & then glows at night, presumably a bit like a solar light?? Maybe it is a solar light?!I thought about getting one, but at the time it was about £20, which I thought was a bit steep!! _pale_
Anyway, will keep reading &, I hope, putting everyone's great MFW ideas into practice.
*goes off to kick myself up the backside in the hope of getting motivated* :santa2:0 -

Well done shaz, you are always very good at stockpiling
I guess the challenge is how on earth not to be tempted and just get the milk and fruit!
Glad hubby is building a desk to save your poorly shoulders/back
TPA, piccie of a sunjar here:
it soaks up a lot of sun during the day even in these wintry months. Quite useful for my early waking and also to keep on the landing when traipsing along to see which of the babies is crying post-march! But without having a light on permanentlysweetserendipity is spot on with her explanation
TPA, I'll be interested if you find a scientific answer to measuring gas consumption. the best we've done is to take a baseline reading for an hour when we make no extra demands on our gas, so no heating, and no cooking. And then compared it to an hour when the oven or heating is on. This is very inexact, so I'd be intrigued to know if anyone finds a better way!
Thank you all for the energy saving tips and for all the lovely compliments about FergusIt's great to have support in this MFW journey.
Some MFW bad news: looks like our boiler may have had itdepending on whether it needs replacing or just fixing, I'm looking at losing 100-1000 pounds next month, so that reduces the op I could have made. Hey ho, pick self up, dust self down and get back on track!

Hi all.
Weezle I don't know if this will be any good for you but, soon to be son-in-law was telling me that a friend had bought a moniter from British Gas that does electric AND gas consumption. Dont know anything else about it, but it might be worth looking at their site.
With regard to the boiler, at least it should save you money in the long term, as a new one should be more efficient. When we changed ours the gas dropped to one fifteenth of previous! We did change from a Rayburn though (like an Aga it runs 24 hours a day) but I still miss being all cosy in the kitchen as soon as I got up.

Hmmm i didn't bother getting a new 0% card in november as savings account rates combined with transfer fees make it worthless , but now you have got me thinking.if you could get a virgin/egg card that allows cash transfers to a bank i suppose it would be the same as taking out a 0% loan which saves you whatever the % is on your mortgage.
I need to ponder more and straight in my head
edited in: i suppose it is like saving up all year to make an OP but doing it in advance and saving 12 months interest on that amount
would be interested to see an example (I can't figure out what the 12 months interest saved would be ) if that is more than the transfer fee then it would be well worth the effort.
Say my mortgage is 4% for comparison reasons and i pay 5k off how much will i save on interset payments on that 5K ? assuming a year for repayment of 0%CC*****
