Meh.. without flaming, that's a ridiculously biased comment without any evidence or backup to prove your opinion. In which case no-one wants to hear it.

This thread discusses the beta for the people who use it or want to. We don't care if you don't like vista and think it will be bad...

I installed vista on my mid range laptop and it runs as fast as XP does. It looks a LOT nicer (due to windows aero etc), has a lot more support and usability... it in fact in my opinion, will increase the amount of older people who use windows as it is a lot easier to use for those who dont know much about computers.

Protection wise it is MUCH more secure than XP.

So before you go around spreading the word its crap.. do some damn research. Its only in its beta stages after all so the full version will be a lot different still.....

Oh.. and yes im annoyed that I cant get the net working on it properly.. but once again its a beta. Doesnt mean i go around saying " OMG VISTA SUCKS" :s. Grow up :)

Oh dear I seem to have rattled someone's cage. I am sorry.
    I've £25 on Argentina at 12/1.
Anybody seen any betting on the success of Vista yet?
    I'll maybe have another flutter..
    Grow up indeed..

Is it worth installing Vista at this stage or should I try the shell?
I was thinking about installing it on my £299 Dell lappy, but can't be bothered with messing for 4 hours to sort out the router. The Dell lappy only comes with a Dell wireless card as well, not the Intel card so are there likely to be any problem with the drivers?

    Any thoughts?

If you only want it for its look then install the shell. This is beta and comes with problems. Unless you have some kind of knowledge about beta software it would be better to stay clear. This wont run most of todays programs so you could be left with a system that is now no use to you.

Microsoft support just sent back some usefull info.. To play most newer games you will have to install DirectX 9 again. Vista comes with Direct X 10 but it is not backward compatible.Installing Direct X 9 along side is OK and will not harm the system Also some performance gains can be had by installing the Via drivers if you have a VIA chipset on your motherboard.

:jHave Win XP Home Edition 32 bit but have a 64bit processor, so upgraded Win Vista 32bit over XP which took 2 hours, everything worked fine, it was a doodle, also having the 64bit could'nt wait to try it, uninstalled XP and Vista 32bit did a clean install of the Vista 64bit took 45 minutes to put on but could'nt get anything to work with it so uninstalled it, now putting Vista 32bit back on, by the way you can't upgrade the Vista 64bit on to a XP 32bit, as it won't let you.
All in all I love it, the media centre works with Skybybroadband if anyone's interested, but watch your download as it's live streaming, and play's havoc with your download usage, I've got 30gbs usage but after one week my ISP was on my back.
Check out your hardware websites such as asrock and nvidia they have drivers for vista, so far I've had fun trying the two different versions the 64bit has two IE 32bit/64bit and thats about all the difference I could see, as long as you put all the software on first that you want to use and .Net.framework 2.0 and are up to date with all the latest updates, I can't see why it wont work on most pc's and I've got it untill next June 2007 so it give's me plenty off time to get use to it before it's out on sale, I'm happy, thankyou Mr Gates for letting the public have it.:j

I put Vista beta 2 on this evening and it lasted all of a few hours. The OS couldnt find drivers for my network card (built into mobo Asus P4P800 deluxe, gigalan network card), couldnt find sblive drivers, no epson r300 printer support, Epson scanner not found, but I would expect that as its a few years old now) so pc couldnt go on net anyhow. Only driver I managed to find was a Nvidia video card driver for Vista.

I couldnt find the drivers on another pc on net as no vista drivers excist, so poor show. I had far less trouble with a beta xp many years ago.

Its a Beta so any missing drivers can be found by your Manufacturers website or driverguide or on the discs that came with any peripheral.

:j I think what people should do before trying Vista is look around for the beta drivers of all your hardware software download them and put them onto a removable usb disc flash drive them put vista on and all the drivers although I've had no problems with drivers, as I built this computer with vista in mind if you go to microsoft you can download a tool that will tell you if your pc is up to vista and what to upgrade, :j
