MercilessKiller wrote:Yes I turned security off. And come on, from my description of the problem, not being able to ping the router, do you think I could access other computers? Course not.. if I could then the ping would work fine!!!!!!!
The strange thing is vista comes with special drivers for my network device which is why my brain is getting rattled (and frustrated).
WEP should work fine. Its more basic than WPA thus vista prob having only basic support for it. Should still work though!!
Not being able to ping the router but being able to see other computers on the network is actually a known problem with DG834GT routers. It has something to do with the networking config.
I take it yo cant access the router status page then.
OK.... When Vista was installed and you opened the network config page did your adapter actually show?? When I had my problems my adapter didnt show in the property page but it would show as connected (HUH) But no connection was actually made. It even asked for the passkey to connect.
If you can see your adapter then you should click properties and go to the configure button to configure your wireless device and check that your regional settings are correct (europe). Mine was always put to United States as default and had to be changed for it to connect to the router0 -

In the network config page it showed a "Wireless Network Device" or something along those lines. I could access the hardware profile for it, also the ip configuration settings etc.....
I didn't look at the regional settings no. Thing is I'd spend more time trying things, but I'm not sure if its worth it on my laptop. At a side, will all the dell drivers for things such as sound, touchpad scroll functions, quickset/power meter etc etc.. will they all work on vista without any problems? I dont want a half working laptop
If they will all work fine I may reinstall vista later and give it another go! I want to get it working so bad but this internet prob is driving me crazy. May borrow my fathers PCMCIA card and give that a try!
EDIT:
On aside, I may use norton ghost to create an image of XP on my laptop, then install vista. If it doesnt work use the image to get back to before. Would that work all ok?[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Windows has a driver database that loads up when connected to the internet. If you choose windows update when connected to the internet it will automatically download the needed drivers for sound and stuff. It got drivers for my Creative Soundblaster Audigy, My raid device and Bluetooth device,0

I'll give it a try later day. I hope I can get the quickset software for the dell so i can monitor power etc..
Ah well, lots of work to be done. God damn i hope it works[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Can someone give me the straightforward practical advantages of having a 5 Gbyte operating system on a brand new pc.
Seems to me like buying a Ferrari, putting a towbar on it and hitching up a 40ft trailer full of fridges to it.
Everything I need to run, runs fine and dandy with XP.
Surely Billy G, it'd be wiser to wait until some huge upgrade in PC power appeared, and write the OS around that (full parallel processing perhaps?)
I think Vista will be like Windows 2000, so Godawfully slow and insecure, it'll be complete ignored by most.0 -

Meh.. without flaming, that's a ridiculously biased comment without any evidence or backup to prove your opinion. In which case no-one wants to hear it.
This thread discusses the beta for the people who use it or want to. We don't care if you don't like vista and think it will be bad...
I installed vista on my mid range laptop and it runs as fast as XP does. It looks a LOT nicer (due to windows aero etc), has a lot more support and usability... it in fact in my opinion, will increase the amount of older people who use windows as it is a lot easier to use for those who dont know much about computers.
Protection wise it is MUCH more secure than XP.
So before you go around spreading the word its crap.. do some damn research. Its only in its beta stages after all so the full version will be a lot different still.....
Oh.. and yes im annoyed that I cant get the net working on it properly.. but once again its a beta. Doesnt mean i go around saying " OMG VISTA SUCKS". Grow up

OMG VISTA SUCKS. :rotfl:
@Mercilesskiller.
How easy is it to actually uninstall, is it via a Sys Restore or has it an Uninstaller?
Cheers.0 -
u mean uninstall vista?
You must format and install another operating system. That as far as I am aware is the only way to remove the OS.
Just an update to my problem before.. i've fixed it.
IMPORTANT FOR WIRELESS USERS:
Windows AUTOMATICALLY assumes the WEP key is key index 1. And the option is hidden to change the key index (mine was 4). By using windows automatic problem solver it gave me the option menu whereby I could change the key index and vwala it worked finally
Amazing os[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Ok cheers that seems simple enough, cheers ears.
On my way to installing Asta la Vista. :rolleyes:0 -
MercilessKiller wrote:I gave up on windows vista beta 2 today. here's why and if anyone has a solution please post.
Installed Vista 2 on the laptop. Install was fine.
The laptop has an intel 2200bg wireless adapter in built (dell inspiron 6000). Vista 2 comes with dirvers to support this.
I connected to my home network but the ip the adapter was getting through dhcp began with 169.x.x.x and subnet 255.255.0.0 wen my details are 192.168.x.x 255.255.255.240
So i manually changed the ip settings. It connected full (no limited connectivity) but couldnt connect to the net.
In ipconfig i could ping the loopback address no problem, but wen i pinged the router, it would time out.
No firewalls were on.
I tried installing loads of other drivers for the wireless adapter, but then it wouldnt work at all.
Unless someone has a 100% solution, i aint going back to vista
Strange, my Inspiron 9300 has the same wireless card and setting up my wireless network was a breeze (Vista automatically assigns you to a domain named WORKGROUP so I changed that, entered my WPA key and I was off and running).
The only two pieces of hardware Vista didn't detect were the soundcard and modem.
The only drawback (so far) is that AVG Free won't install under Vista so I need to look around for another anti-virus solution.
Other than that, very impressive. You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0
