Oh dear! Right now, we're putting new stuff (surplus home grown beans, etc) into our upright garage freezer faster than we're taking stuff out to eat and it's now a problem to push the door shut. It's beginning to feel like the overpacked airing cupboard - open the door and everything falls out.0

Would gladly give away Rhubarb as have a glut of it on the allotment and thanks for the offer of blackberries but we have loads of bushes round here to pick from but end up just storing them in the freezerMortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
LOL Well you could always do rhubarb ketchup, rhubarb jam, rhubeena, sweet pickled rhubarb or bottled rhubarb with honey...
I just looked up a few in my River Cottage preserves book

hi everyone,
i wonder if you can help with an odd storecupboard situation.... my cupboards, probably like lots of other people on here, used to be stuffed full of packets of all sorts of things that hardly ever got used, but somehow made me feel vaguely secure!
then a couple of weeks ago we had a 'food moth' infestation.:(disgusting, i didnt' even know there were such things! had to massively disinfect, and throw out more or less EVERYTHING except one or two unopened packets that were stored in a different, unaffected cupboard.
it was awful having to throw so much food away (though some had expired to be honest). So now i am thinking that, rather than rushing out and spending money on a huge variety of stuff i won't use for ages and which might even end up getting spoilt by bugs again, i should just rely on the few storecupboard things i've got left as mcuh as possible for the next few weeks, just buying fresh stuff like milk and eggs and veg, if possible!
sooo.... preamble over, this is all i have got left now -
polenta / cornmeal
wholemeal pasta (penne)
red lentils
quinoa
tahini paste
pumpkin seeds
walnuts
cocoa powder
honey
plus various tins of pulses (mostly chickpeas/haricot beans/chilli beans), tomatoes, and fish.
plus herbs, spices, coffee, vinegar & oil
plus in fridge
salad and summer veg
butter, milk, cottage cheese, hard cheese, parmesan, smoked tofu.
plus soda bread.
i have also just been on a little detox so am quite keen to keep eating as healthily as possible - and usually am just cooking for one/two (though sometimes more).
all suggestions gratefully received!
love
caroline x
PS have also invested in some of those glass jars in the pound shop - no more open packets in cupboards for me, ever! (ok - i probably sound like a terrible slob - but i've learnt the hard way!)"The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -
I keep a lot of stuff--especially opened packets--in old ice cream tubs & biscuit tins. They are kind of seperated into seeds, nuts, dried fruit, puddings[eg jelly, blancmange, semolina]cooking & it makes it a lot easier to store things & also to reach the ones at the back of the cupboard, cuz you don't have to move millions of packets, just the odd box or two.
