  • On the Irish Scottish Cabbage thing There is a lovely recipe that uses savoy cabbage and potato base of leek and potato soup another delicious recipe.
Tastebuds need to be acclimatised in psychologically and physically sensitive way. Better to attack any dietary sins little by little but with a firm hand of delicious recipes, consummate and reliable cooking skills and an unerring eye for the [budgeted] tasty [fruit] and veg.

Yea I do make soup, I'm good at soup. :D cos it doesnt need any cooking really. Tattie and leek, back-of-the-fridge veg, ham & lentil, carrot and lentil. Thats how I get my veg mostly.
I will try this week really hard, more veg and less meat. I've even been on the BBC food site in recipes  OH begged me not to bother cooking cos its bad enough at best of times but when I try its much, much worse ;)
  • @madartha Yup gentle but firm delicious tasty and tempting recipes into Veggie appreciation-dom and Fruit-dom?? is a Journey well worth taking. Sinning as in Butter Balls? Deep Fried Mars Bars and other Scottish sins can be indulged best within the kindly framework of a wonderful Five-a-day which I measure as 500g per person or 100g of every fruit or vegetable measured in the Official Charts.( I will not subscribe to this 80g nonsense but decide to go for the jugular at 100g easier to calculate as well). 500g is almost a lb in fruit/veg!
Lentils and Beans including Baked Beans all aid the pursuit of one or two of your five and are delicious to boot.
My experience of above: Fat and fatty foods (me great sinner here!) contradicts the flavours and delights of beans, lentils, fruit and veg. So job is to adjust diet and tastebuds over time to tastily prepared the above AND indulge in the odd Scottish Sin or English Delight. One cannot be good all the time!!!
(I love Syllabub which is basically a double cream desert with sherry brandy whisky and fresh lemon juice sin sin and more sin!!!)

WBQMS - I have to admit I don't mind fat at all. But I don't eat a lot of it :) I don't eat a lot of anything nowadays, hence the trying to be healthy bit. I only eat a tiny plate of porridge for BF, tiny plate of soup at noon, and then the meal at night and that's it. But I couldnt faff about with that 5 portions a day stuff, I prefer meat and two veg. Think it's the same thing really just Old Style :)
  • @mardatha aka mardywotsit What you need to do is food to grab and go. Banana Custard ( I use Ambrosia Ready made Custard), Sliced Meat Platters, Liver Pate on Toast, various things on Toast, Beans on toast if you like them ( I prefer baked beans on butter fried Fried Bread!!! cooked with a bit of garlic and or onion to lift the flavour!!!). Houmous is good too in a pitta. Pitta bread seems very amenable to the snacky type of eater.
I would personally go on a Gourmet Binge as Scotland I know for a fact has a wonderful culinary culture. Get along to the Scottish Good Food Show and or Foodie Festivals and you might find yourself falling in love with food again, but in a Qaulity budget nabbing way (my approach). best of luck and take care!!!!

  • @mardatha aka mardywotsit Why not reconfigure the old Meat and 2 veg to Meat and 3 or even 4 veg? Does it have to be just 2? Not in my books!
Veg wise excellent selection of ideas for Garden but I suspect a bit of the old familiar friends might not go amiss, carrots, onions, parsnips, swede, Kale, cabbage, sqaush etc. I hope you get the right selection for your Garden and so go nicely forward on the [fruit] and veg front, deliciously, reliably, every inch of the way.

TY pet, yes I try to hide veg in things :) I can do lamb mince or stew with lots of veg, if its in wee enough bits then I cant taste it and am ok LOL - Also soups, like soup. Am sitting here plotting the 2012 veggies as we speak .
  • I have made many a random meal with rather dubious ingredients before. Its a good thing I have a strong stomach. It may be this way from my eating habits.
