  • thankyou so very very much I have tonnes of inspiration now have loads of tinned toms in the cupboard and some potato so am going to do the aduki chilli and a cottage pie over the next week or so and have plenty of ideas for the week after now as well thanks to pink winged and the threads

thanks for all your help am now feeling a bit better about the meals I can provide with what we have got and I can use up loads of things that have been sat in the cupboard for ages:T:T:T:T
  • 'Aduki beans - what a fab ingredient' That was a thread I started, oh how things have changed, I have a very fussy 5 year old who would now have a nervous breakdown if I put an Aduki bean lasagne in front of him. But then again anything burger shaped he'll eat, maybe aduki burgers are on the cards, having said that I do recall they stink out the house whilst on the boil.
  • I've been doing a sort of storecupboard challenge since xmas - my cupboards are still bursting and yet I found I was always shopping saying we had nothing to eat! So, I've been shopping as little as possible, trying to use up what I have in. :j

Last night, my sis suggested marmite pasta, which we'd seen on Nigella a few weeks ago. We just cooked up some spagetti, and while that was cooking, melted a couple of tablespoons of veg marg in a pan, adding a teaspoon of marmite into that - to be honest, I think we could have used more marmite as it was a subtle taste, but I guess that's all down to personal preference. When the pasta was done, we kept back a cup of the water, then strained it, mixing the pasta into the 'sauce'. Nigella says to use the pasta water if you need to make the sauce a bit saucier, but ours covered fine, so we didn't bother. We also had some garlic bread which I 'made' over xmas using a french stick that was a bit dry. I just slice almost through it, and pasted in vegan butter mixed with some parsley and garlic powder, and bunged it in the freezer. I popped it in the oven straight from frozen and it came out lovely a few mins later. :T:T

Probably not the most nutritious meal in the world, but we fancied stodge and this hit the mark completely :D

Ok, I have about 15 eggs, quite a lot of bread, about 400ml of double cream, couple of onions & carrots, a pot of soya single cream, a few potatoes and rather a lot of eating apples that need using up or turning into freezable somethings!

Any ideas? I have lots of storecupboard things in (including rather a lot of brown sugar that I'm not so keen on as my usual brand - it's ok in baking but not nice on porridge etc) but not much in the way of cheese or meat - I will buy some bits if needed but am sure I must be able to do something interesting with what I have that needs using up!

Just cooking for one - but happy to freeze things :)

you can scamble eggs and freeze them (uncooked) same for bread, i would use your carrots/taties/onions and cream in a layered potaotoe dish, just chop it all up, wing it all in and top with cheese and pop it in the oven, you can freeze this once cooked aswell, and emm apple crumble (you can use some of your sugar in it) or just stewed apple, i made some stewed apples tonight with custard was alot cheaper and healthier than nipping to the shop for choclate

French toast (use the cream or milk+cream with egg and sprinkle with brown sugar after dipping bread in mix) for breakfast and puddings with apple slices sauteed in butter and brown sugar.

A custardy bread pudding- use twice as much off the egg/milk/cream custard mixture as normal. Apple custard bread pudding(think there is a river cottage recipe for something alone these lines) or a layer of apples at the bottom of a bread pudding, like a bread pudding apple crumble! Bread pudding freezes well.

For something savoury try knedliky bread dumplings, they're much tastier than usual dumplings, you can eat them alone with a sour cream dip and pickles for lunch they're so tasty. http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/knedliky---czech-dumpling-with-sauerkraut-zeli/Detail.aspx
Cook it as a big roll and slice like a loaf, or make smaller sweet dumplings by encasing slices of fruit dipped in sugar with the dough before cooking.
The plain knedliky freezes well when sliced first.

thanks for those two ideas - more are very welcome!
the apples are eating apples & don't stew down very well but I'll have a go tomorrow & see if I can do something with them. I already have quite a lot of bread in the freezer & this is towards the end of its life so I'd rather use it if possible - it's mostly brown bread if that makes any difference

I don't have any milk or anything for custard & don't like bread&butter pudding (well I like savoury but haven't got any decent cheese only a scrap of wensleydale with cranberry or smthing - def not savoury!!)
the knedlicky sound interesting - I may try them ...

well I tried some of the apples cooked in a tiny bit of butter & some brown sugar - and yum! they didn't go nice and mushy-soft though like cooking apples do, but def one I'll try again ...

    anymore ideas anyone?

Core and slice the apples, soften in butter and serve with the French toast :)

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add this to the existing Storecupboard Challenge thread.

I discovered a good way to use up old ginger biscuits today - crush them to a powder and add them to a curry! Sounds gross, but it gives a sweet spicy flavour and thickens up the sauce. Try it, honestly!
