Store cupboard challenge

Today I made Smoked Haddock Chowder, using smoked haddock and parsley from the freezer and soy milk and tinned sweetcorn from cupboards, plus potatoes and a leek I bought specially for the recipe.
And I’m finally using up my bread flour. I tried to experiment by substituting 50g flour for 50g quick cook porridge oats in the malted loaf recipe I’m using and the breadmaker still has 45mins to go, but the loaf inside looks very strange, like the dough was too wet. I guess I shouldn't have taken the flour out then, oops.:o
Nuala, you could make gooey dessert toffee with your condensed milk, just heat butter and sugar in a pan, and when the sugar dissolves into the butter add the condensed milk and remove from the heat when the sugars in the mixture start to caramelise. Your post about tea reminded me I need to make inroads on my own teabag collection, so I’m currently sipping a delicious mug of nettle tea :beer:0 -
Well i took a day off and thread vanished ( but hardluck i found you:p )
well shopping was pants week one and i've already blown the budget i've come in at £27 as hubby needed razor blades, i think he must be mowing the lawn (i wish) with his razor as he getting thru them fast, think i might start lusting over some actor with a beard and see if he get's the hint:rotfl:
I've still got milk and bread to get for the weekend i have runners, colly, peas and sweetcorn in the freezer so that will have to do for sundays roast then i think i will only be about £3 OB.
everyone seem's to be doing well, im going to have a go at san frans interesting lasagna might start to make a mark on the huge sack of spuds i brought last week. Anyone have any thought on what to do with some left over guinea fowl ?
Has anyone come across stuff lurking in there freezer that could be anything? ive got to bags that look like soup but im actually to scared to defrost them in case they make a run for it, god only knows how long they've been lurking:D
hope you feel better soon Nuala, and best wishes to everyone0 -

We regularly have this problem! :rotfl:"Freezer dip surprise" is what we call dinner at least once a week, because we gave up writing what we thought we were having on the meal planner and then getting a shock when we defrosted it... (Yes, I know we could label the stuff when we freeze it, but we need to have a little excitement in our lives!!). Luckily, we are very easy-going eaters, so have no objections to eating sweet and sour chicken or chilli con carne on pasta (because we thought it was a pasta sauce and had already started cooking pasta as an accompaniment!).

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does this! I had bolognese sauce with rice a couple of weeks ago (I thought it was chilli...) - that one doesn't work so well, I have to say.
I really must try and track down some freezer-proof labels - does anyone have any ideas where I can get some?
And a late response, as I was out last night: LizzieB - I can't see anything un-MSE about drinking vodka and fanta - it's cheaper than going to the pub, so it must be money saving, right?Back after a very long break!0 -
Nuala - I would love to join in with this, however, this is the time of year we tend to stock up insanely on nonperishables. DH works for Sains, and his employee discount is up to 15% from tomorrow until 6 January, so we try to add stocking up items to every shop within that time period. A bit counterproductive to the "use the store cupboard"!
It is a great challenge though, and I will still be watching it with interest. We do get a bit antsy if we start running low on certain things, and both DH & I like to keep supplies in just in case we have a short month financially. Best of luck!MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -

Hi all!
I think it's about time i joined in this challenge! We have 1.5 large chest-freezers full of pork!!!And the other 0.5 is filled with other food.
The kitchen cupboards are bulging, but i have no idea what i've got in them.. whenever i look in them i can never see anything to cook?! ???
It's going to be too much of a big job to go through the freezers to find out exactly what joints of pork i've got, but this morning i got out a small loin joint, a small belly joint and a small tied & rolled part-leg joint.
All are in the bottom of the fridge, defrosting. I'll cook them all together and then portion up into meals for the coming week or so. Just have to figure out what meals to put it in!
I'm planning on spending just £15-20 per week for the next few weeks (maybe until christmas?) to cover milk, butter, sugar, coffee and f&v (including potatoes, which we'll probably have with most evening meals to cut down on cost).
Do you think this is do-able?0 -
This challenge is a great idea Nuala. I`ve really got the bit between my teeth now. Although we havent got enough to last to Christmas, we certainly have enough for the next 22 days or so.
I`ve gor enough flour and yeast for bread, 4 litres of UHT milk and have checked toiletries, loo roll, soap powder etc. Even the dogs have enough food to last.
OH`s next payday is 13th November and my intention is to get to then spending as little as possible (on f&v if needed), so 3 weeks money saved!!
THANK YOU - why couldnt I have thought of this myself? I have plenty of motivation, I just needed someone to kick my ****0 -

With Tofu we used to marinade it in soy sauce, honey and mustard and can't remember the other ingredients and then cook it on a griddle pan, it was the only way we could eat Tofu! Very old recipe on the cauldron pack, ages since I have seen it, but try Cauldron's website http://cauldronfoods.co.uk/recipes/maincourses/0
