On my 10th birthday, my mum sent me to have a bath in the morning and there was a pretty pink bag left for me with 2 white bra's, a heart necklace with my initial, and a pack of pads. I hadn't started my period yet but, it gave me time to ask questions and start to feel like a young lady, with the bra's, even though I didn't really need them! I didn't actually start until I was 13 or 14 but, I don't remember being embarassed or anything, it just felt like the 'next stage' in growing up. I told my mum and she asked if I still had the pads, I did and that was that!

I love the idea of one post - who said they used to get a pack of pads with a bar of chocolate on their bed every month. All packs of pads/tampons should come with a bar of chocolate! Brilliant idea!!

Awwwwwwwwww how sweet!!!! You must have been so chuffed, bless your mum! :A

I remember that post about the bar of chocolate every month too and thought it was lovely. :)

I knew what it was but friends of the family were over so I panicked, changed my knickers and told my Mum a few hours later!

I was pretty upset about it, more the inconvenience than anything though, I'd been hoping I'd not start yet for a couple or 3 years (I was 11, about to turn 12). We got given packs in school and told those would be enough for us for a few years - oh no, I needed always super ultra whatever things, never mind the "light" ones given by school!

I was a bit embarressed but our family's always been very open about sex and periods and stuff, so I got over that quickly enough.

Had some choccy that was about it, I really didn't see it as special, just a pain really!

I remember my aunt giving me a little pack she made up for me with some pads and tampons in, and i think i started a few months later aged 12.
I lived with my nan and i remember waking up and going to the toilet and seeing my lovely sky blue PJ bottoms covered in red blood.

I think i went "NAAAAAAAN!!! I think i started my period.."

And she asked if i still had my starter kit my aunt made me and then from then on i always had them, i dont remember buying them so my nan must of bought them for me lol.

Am I loads younger than everyone else? I started my periods in the mid 80's and used tampons from my first period. I assumed most people did...towels were for 'old' ladies like my mum (who must have been in her mid thirties then, lol)

I don't remember ever being told about periods but I knew what it was when it started, and remember telling my mum when she came home from work that I had started.

Not much younger than me - started mine early 80s. My mum gave me a belt and thick towels with loops - enough to frighten the **** out of a 10 year old girl!!! She used tampons and must of had the towels in the cupboard since she was young!!

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

My mum always bought me my pads and tampons, can't imagine her expecting me to go and buy them myself! I didn't get much pocket money as it was and as it was a small town you would know the woman behind the counter at the (only) chemist's shop. How cringy would that have been!!

    I love my mum. :)

We got shown a video in primary school when I was 10, all about starting your periods. I went home and plucked up the courage to tell my Mum about what we'd been shown, as I wanted to know more I suppose. My Mum just said 'oh right' and walked off. I was really quite sad that she was more embarrassed than me to talk to me about it.

I started my periods 2 years later, but never told her. I had no money to buy pads, so had to make do with toilet paper (she used massive tampons - well they looked massive as they were in a long plastic tube). I used to handwash my knickers, dry them and then put them in the laundry to be washed properly. When I got a weekend job I was able to by my own.

My dd is only 5, but I will tell her all about them, not in an embarrassing way, as I don't want her to go what I went through. I've enjoyed reading this thread, lots of you got at least some support, and some none. It's been a great help and has given me ideas on how I'll beable to deal with it sensitively with dd when the time comes.

My mum bought me my first couple of packs then told me I needed to get a paper round to buy my own. She would not be purchasing any in future! Nice.
